To be fair, I think Spock may be whiter than Kirk.....
But it is weird. And easily fixed with a variation on the First Best Destiny shtick. Spock stands aside in favour of Kirk as he does not want command, and Prime Spock has shown him something of his future from the other universe. I don't think Kirk is often portrayed in the GWS role, outside of some dated TOS oddities with central casting native folk.
The whole aesthetic of the new movies is already based on TOS anyway. Beyond even more so. All of Trek, in some way, is.

They could then fight with appropriate music. Makes as much sense as Prime Spock derailing the otherwise interesting take (to that point) on Khan in STID. I am still waiting for the next film to have A Sybok character turn out to be Sisko who rages the universe back into the right shape. It's my preferred ending. With Jazz.
At the moment we don't know the story so all we really have to go on is the way it looks.
We're just going to have to wait, I guess. For those saying that it HAS to look updated for a modern audience, etc etc, it really doesn't have to look like the new movies. Modern trek production doesn't equal flashy flaring lights. The trailer reminds me of Into Darkness and TFA, but with a much more serious tone. Hopefully they put together another trailer soon. I look forward to actually seeing the Discovery, which I thought looked very "23rd century," if you will. When I first saw that other ship, I was worried that they got rid of it. Has anyone commented on it? You'd think they'd have released a publicity photo of it by now.

You do realize that the new movies ooz with TOS aesthetics, right? Up to and including Beehives on the women.
The Sixties are over, no one is going to field a professional production that looks like it was made in that decade. From what I can tell the show has the Star Trek aesthetic , updated for the 21st Century. The bridge looks like a Star Trek Bridge.
As for the Klingons, they look like Klingons. Boney ridges and a fierce demeanor.
I've said this before, I had no expectations of it looking like it was made in the 60s. But there are other ways of updating the visuals to still look modern but look much more like TOS. The uniforms in the movies are a good example of this. They are still instantly recognizable as TOS uniforms but they look more sophisticated and less like pajamas. Yes, there are other ways they could have gone. But this is the way they chose. Sorry it disappoints you, but no point in crying about it now. It's happening.
I kind of like the look of certain elements. The uniforms are cool except I don't like the lack of color variation, and the interior of the Shenzhou is a little dark for my tastes. I just think if you're trying to create a modernized version of the TOS aesthetic it could look better.
TV is a visual medium, so how it looks will play into how people interpret the material.
While we've come up with ways to fudge it over the years, it is pretty clear the intent of "Turnabout Intruder" was that no women commanded starships, nor did we see any female commodores or admirals. Discovery, set ten years prior to TOS, will obviously ignore this piece of archaic inanity. But, how much can they ignore or change before it is no longer considered "Prime"?
Or do people need it to be "Prime" that badly that they'll just ignore pretty much any evidence to the contrary and hang on that producer's statement until the bitter end?
I don't understand the asthetic complaints.
A friend of mine has a really nice car. It's lovely. Stylish modern design, sleak lines, build for speed and power, looks absolutely gorgeous and with all it's fancy computer systems, it's smarter than I am! I have another friend who has a car with a passenger door held on by duct tape and hope, looks like a boxty piece of crap and is the only car I know of that still has a tape deck.
Yet both cars exist in the same reality.
If it's not Prime, they can't claim something is a canon violation, and then what would they do?
But the Enterprise is barely ten years old and we still have no idea the ages of Discovery and the Shenzou. Unlike cars, this is a military/scientific organization that likely keeps its ships up-to-date with periodic refits. We already know the Enterprise underwent one such refit between "The Cage" and TOS proper.
So the equipment, all things being equal, should be roughly the same across ships. That way you aren't having to retrain people everytime they take on a new assignment.
A reboot solves these issues.
Also, the Shenzou is not the main ship, so we don't know what the Discovery will look like inside.
I'm not sure how many times that has been said in this thread. It falls on deaf ears, my friend.
Oh, i get it. But, this is one of the drums I'll beat, kind of like Jaylah. Same thing Kelvin universe Trek and how well it fits with TOS Trek, and a lot of the "plot holes" are there in the story.
Yeah, it may be futile, but it's that one thing in Trek that sticks out to me.
