Here is why canon is important to Trek.

Nog did not go from Cadet to Chief Engineer in one episode. Nog stopped being a Cadet in Favor the Bold when he received a field commission and became an officer with the rank of Ensign. He remained an ensign for a year and a half and was promoted to Lieutenant, though there is no indication he was chief engineer. Regardless, going from Cadet to Lieutenant in the span of a year and a half during wartime is yes much more realistic than someone instantly being promoted from Cadet to Captain and given command of the flagship.

Harry is kind of pushing it, but Voyager is a smaller ship so it's not that bad. Dr. Bashir was a prodigy, having graduated second in his class in medical school, and as noted above DS9 was at first a backwater assignment.

It was an emergency situation. Had things gone normally, she'd only have been keeping the seat warm until a qualified pilot showed up, probably one of the background bridge guys. Unfortunately, the saucer just happened to crash while she was at the helm. And while everyone makes jokes about Deanna always crashing ships, the one thing they overlook is that in Generations, despite the fact she was sitting at the helm, Data had in fact taken over fight operations, during the crash it is he who leveled their descent so they would crash bottom-down.

I wonder if Kirk in the Kelvin Universe was able to keep command because Future Spock and Pike both put in a good word for him. Also Is it possible that the Enterprise isn't the flagship in the Kelvin Universe? Maybe the brass felt more comfortable giving him the job because the ship wasn't going to be used for the more important missions. I mean when the second movie comes out I was under the impression they were still evaluating him which is one of the reasons they were going to put Pike back in command.

As for Troi taking command I would still think command would go towards O'Brien or Ro or even the other dude their before giving it to a untrained counselor. I know O'Brien isn't a officer but they still felt comfortable with making him Chief of Operations on DS9 which means he would be giving commands to engineers who did go to the acaedmy.

Pike says it is in Trek XI.

Because Uhura's with Kirk when he tries to warn Pike about Nero. She backs him up, so Pike prompts her to corroborate some of the presented evidence (the Klingon attack,)

He later has her replace his original officer when the latter can't even scan for Romulan broadcasts.

They (Kirk, Pike , and Spock) all refer to her as Lt, even before they're assigned to the Enterprise. With one exception from Pike, before he's informed of her identity.

Pike says it is in Trek XI.

Gotta wonder if that changed by the time of the five-year-mission.

I mean, there's not much use in a flagship that's never anywhere near the rest of the fleet. The status changes often enough IRL.

Depends on what meaning of Flagship they are using. Flagship as in command vessel of the fleet? Command ship of a flag officer? Or in terms of being the premier vessel of Starfleet, in the cruise line sense of the word, like they did with the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise in TNG.

Mind you, Admiral Pike might have kept Enterprise as his flagship even though it was under the command of Captain Kirk. After Pike's death, well I don't know. By the time the ship gets back into service, she's sent out on a five year mission, which is suppose to be a new prestigious thing they way Kirk talks about it. By the time they get back to Starbase Yorktown, Starfleet is offering Kirk a flag position (mind you, Captain Kirk has been in Starfleet for less than ten years at this point, and only been in command of USS Enterprise for the last five years or so.) If Starfleet is willing to bump Kirk to the Admiralty, I suppose you could qualify Enterprise as a flagship, even though Kirk is not yet a flag officer.

USS Enterprise, in the Prime Timeline, was likely Admiral Kirk's flagship for anything he needed doing. Even as a training ship, he was an Admiral and he did take command of the mission over Captain Spock. Earlier, over Captain Decker, I'm not sure, since we don't see the full aftermath of the V'Ger Incident until many years have past. Admiral/Captain Kirk may have remained onboard for year before retiring and handing the ship over to Spock and Starfleet Academy.

I have a question about KIrk in the Kelvin Universe. Is his jump through ranks any more harder to buy than Nog's quick rise on "DS9?" He went from Cadet to Chief ENgineer in the final episode without every going back to the academy after the war. Plus we have Harry Kim become a senior officer right out of the academy and even Doctor Bashir becomes Chief Medical Officer during his first career posting.

Dr. Lense, the officer the was first in her class at Starfleet Medical, was assigned to USS Lexington, a Nebula-class starship, as chief medical officer.
