News Live-Action ‘Cowboy Bebop’ tv series in the works

I agree with both @Christopher and @The Laughing Vulcan on this one. I think it's entirely possible that the Japanese were that on-the-nose about the name and character but I also never really thought of him as such watching the series. It seemed to me there was a line or two that did make me wonder if Jet was supposed to be black but that might have been from watching dub vs sub, I always went with the dub for Bebop, but it's been so long I can't remember. Not that being time for a rewatch is painful with this show.

I found I liked the original voices better than the English-dub voices. I mean, I usually prefer subbed to dubbed in general, but in this case specifically I'm unimpressed by the dubbing. Even though I usually like Steve Blum's work, I don't think he captured Spike well. The original actor conveyed a personality that fit how the character was animated -- a languid, laid-back, too-cool-to-care stoicism worn as protective camouflage for his underlying anger and pain. I don't think Blum's performance captured it well. Beau Billingslea as Jet kind of annoyed me, sounding a bit too comical, and Wendee Lee's voice as Faye had nowhere near the sharp edge of the original. They've done good work elsewhere, but they all seemed miscast to me in this case. I think the only English-dub actor who worked nearly as well as the original actor was Melissa Fahn as Ed.

 

I might try the sub next time but the dub was how I originally experienced it so I have a soft spot for it and it's generally well-regarded. It really has been a long time since I've watched it so I'm not sure what 2017 me would think about them.

 

I first saw it on TV in dubbed form, and I got used to thinking of Spike as sounding like Steve Blum. But when I recently rewatched it in the original Japanese, I realized that the original voices worked much better for the characters than the ones I was used to. Trying new things can be good.

I come at audio from the other end, an original language plus subtitles fan ever since I watched a Jackie Chan movie with his dub actor sounding like an accountant (Arnold Schwarzennegger in Hercules in New York, and Sam Jones in Flash Gordon are other toe-curling examples).

Cowboy Bebop is one of the few English dubs I can watch without switching off.

 

My first round with the series was in Japanese. I was whole-heartedly against dubs at the time in principle rather than by preference. Digimon ruined dubs for me with inserted humor and I decided that all dubs must be viewed as the same. Beforehand, dubs never bothered me much since I was a kid and didn't have access to Japanese audio as most of my anime was DBZ, Sailor Moon, or random stuff I had on VHS. I I remember cringing when I heard Spike and Ed's voices in the dub the first time. Presently, the only dubs I prefer over the original audio is today's Dragon Ball Super and yesterday's Golden Boy.

 

It's best viewed in the original Klingon.

 

Ed in Klingon would make my day.

I think even Shinichiro Watanabe has said he prefers the dubbed version over the original.

 

I was just imagining a live-action Space Dandy, I'm not sure that's even possible.

 

I watched the first two or three episodes of Space Dandy and it was a lot sillier than I was expecting. Did it get 'good' later on or was it silly and episodic the whole time? I wanted to get invested in it and was hoping that I'd get payback through character and plot development, but it didn't hold my interest. I'm wondering if I should go back and give it another try since I always seem to hear it's great.

 

It does pay off its anthology format, but I wouldn't say it's a particularly arc based show. It is really about finding those stories that you appreciate most.

 

If you're looking for continuity and consistency Dandy is not that show. Sometimes aggressively not.

It uses that to tell stories with sometimes outlandish ideas, or character moments, or incredible visuals or silliness without having to figure out how to make it work as some big cohesive whole.

 

Ahh, I guess it really wasn't what I was expecting and that was the turn off. After Bebop and Champloo, I wasn't expecting something like Space Dandy. I'll give it a go next time I'm home sick with the flu or something.

John Cho is Spike, Luke Cage's Mustafa Shakir is Jet, Daniella Pineda is Faye, and Alex Hassell is the villain Vicious.

While I'm glad they went for an Asian lead, Cho is an odd choice, because he's nearly 20 years older than Spike.

 

I wonder why there's no casting announcement for Edward. She's a big part of the series, so you would think they would've cast the role already.

 

Interesting. All good actors, just not what I was picturing.

 

That is a great cast.
