News Discovery Twitter & Social Media Thread

Neville Page posted this image in February and we all missed it.

That picture is captioned "background guy from Star Trek Beyond". What's the Discovery link?

I was wondering if Page was working on Discovery. The DSC Klingons are pretty much his concept sculpts from STID:

He is working on DSC.

He commented on that image in reference to DSC in a group I admin in(where he is a member). Although it's possible his comment means it was a direction for Saru. I've asked him.

Well concept work is often not the same as the final product.
True. They probably started with a more alien version and then reigned it in to make it easier for the actor and perhaps to allow for more expression to get through.

Well one thing I've noticed about Page's designs is that a lot of them from unrelated movies tend to resemble each other. Besides, it's not like this is the first unused Star Trek movie design Discovery has used.
I do prefer the concept design to the final one. It looks less like there's a Human underneath. Obviously that's something they always have to work with, but sometimes there are clever ways to make them look less Human. The long-faced guy at the buy in ST09 for example, he doesn't speak so it's easy to add a realistic looking fake mouth lower down on his chin which makes him look much more alien.

They do share some similarities. I can see how one could be the starting point for the other.

Does the mask allow Saru to smile (raise the corners of the mouth), or might that require Denobulan-style CGI?

i like the little ribbed texture on the concept. Shame that wasn't carried over. I'm sure I'll like Saru, but the makeup is a little lacking.

Pretty sure the ST'09 Klingon Warbirds are based on rejected ENT concept art, as shown in the ST'09 art book
If I remember what Eaves said on his blog correctly, the final design was done by Alex Jaeger inspired by the unused design from ENT. But they're close enough that when I first saw the film I thought it was the exact same design.
I wonder if there will be a Discovery art book. I know we didn't get one for STID or Beyond, but with all the new designs for a TV series there's a lot of material for one. Hopefully the show is successful enough that the demand will exist.

Concept art for Beyond leads to final product in Discovery. I'd say Paramount has the grounds to sue CBS.
I don't think so. Even if Paramount owns the rights to the concept art, they may have shared it back to CBS if they weren't using it. Or perhaps the unused concepts revert to the creator, who recycled it for DSC
