The split delta shield - why?

So, any theories as to why the Starfleet delta shield has split in Discovery? Even the re-used DS9 Starfleet patch (seen on Burnham's space suit and in a box in her quarters, in the trailer) has been modified to have it. Will it have in-universe meaning or is it likely just a unique logo for marketing?

The separation line makes the vertical arrowhead look like the head of a Great White Shark about to breach the surface to eat a seal from below, and ST: Discovery is all an elaborate ruse to promote Shark Week on the Discovery Channel with subliminal advertising?

Someone from the show said last year (probably Fuller) that the split Delta did stand for something. Though he was talking about the actual logo of the show.

He may have meant the badge, or he may have meant a story point. Or what he meant doesn't apply any more after he left.
