The split delta shield - why?

I love the metal pins/com badges of TWOK, TNG, DS9/VOY+variants, Kelvin, STD, they all look great and make great collectibles. However practically, embroidered/printed insignia (TOS, TMP, ENT) make more sense. They can't catch on anything, fall off, be easily taken etc.

I like the new ones, rank pins are a cool addition. I think the split is purely aesthetic. The pins and uniforms make little sense canonically, but design vise at least, I think we have to accept that little will in Discovery.

The embroidered badges also harder to ditch if you're in a situation where being identified as Starfleet could be hazardous to your health. ;)

Haha very true!! Though the uniforms probably don't help there either. You could ditch that, though it might leave you a little exposed!

Maybe one part is a stun grenade and the other part is a disintegration blast grenade? *insert line about how it would be best not to confuse them*

The canon violation here would be if the delta shield were used as the Starfleet logo. After all, it has not been used as such in TOS, TAS, the assorted flashbacks to the era, or the 2233 scenes of STXI. It's merely what the heroes wear on their chests.
Well the Kelvin crew all have the 'Enterprise patch' as their logo, as do the crew of the Franklin which preceded the Kelvin, so it would seem the only aberration from this being Starfleet's logo is the collection of different patches seen in TOS. Other than that, it's been pretty consistently the emblem of Starfleet from some point shortly after the end of Enterprise.

With Bob Justman admitting it was an error in TOS, I see no issue changing it. Even though I personally think the idea of differing patches is cool.

I've seen another explanation that suggests the patches are for different fleets. And it opens up the suggestion that perhaps the split arrowhead is just that -- representation of another fleet.

Personally I have no problem with that idea.

Then again, I have no problem with the arrowhead being in place because it's a recognizable Star Trek symbol either. As I inferred in another thread, the end of MST3K's theme song is something I say to myself relatively frequently while reading Star Trek boards. :p
