Expect lots of Mudd in Discovery - consolidated thread

You never know. A situation could arise where diplomacy takes too long and a photon torpedo makes too much of a mess. You need someone who knows how to play in the grey areas. Someone who has no qualms about getting his hands dirty for the right price. Sounds like Harry Mudd to me.

Maybe the first time we see him in Discovery he's just a simple tailor...

(That wouldn't explain his fashion choices though)

Well, according to IMDB it means nine(!).
Well, I was never very good at math.

I will be curious to see how he's played. It would be interesting to have him explore the things that put him on the run in the first place. Maybe the wife took a whole planet in the divorce ;)

If he's in that many episodes, and they haven't done a major overhaul of his character, then it'll be over as it starts for me. There are still many episodes of DS9 I haven't and never will watch because they feature those horrid Ferengi abominations. But, I can't believe he'd be featured in that many episodes and be a carbon copy of the original character. A happy-go-lucky comedic smuggler would be fine by me if done right, but not in the manner he was originally portrayed.

So yeah, I can be as picky about Star Trek as the more volatile fans if you press the right buttons. "Canon" isn't one of those buttons, but horrid unbelievable characters certainly are. I'm still viewing the "sensing death" alien guy with suspicion. LOL

AFAIK Mudd represents the only confirmed concrete link to TOS, the timing though seems a tad out to have him referencing his mistreatment at the hands of some do gooder starfleet captain and his pointy eared vulcan sidekick.

Don't forget Sarek (and Amanda?), who seems to be an integral part to the series as well.

"Harcourt! Harcourt Fenton Mudd, what have you been up to? Have you been drinking again? You answer me! You miserable, conniving toad! Staying out all night then giving me some silly story. You've been overeating again and drinking! You need constant supervision. I can see I've got my work cut out for me." ~ Stella Mudd

Yep, good old Harry.

The Raiin Wilson version might just phaser her right there and then. I definitely think Rainn can give the part a more menacing aspect, if they go that route.

That's a little disappointing if I'm honest, a ridiculous and dated character whose very inclusion has a strong whiff of small universe syndrome. Multiple episodes may stretch his welcome beyond breaking point.

But if their Mudd is a reimagined version who is more interesting and nuanced, I could be persuaded.

Well as long as those multiple episodes are spread out over several seasons, it should be fine.

We'll see how it goes but I see Mudd as a character like Q who is likely good for one episode a season max. Too much of something hurts.

Now given that it looks like Discovery is going to be serialized he might be in for one story arc but that arc might go over 2-3 episodes.

I still think small doses are better.

Maybe the captain of the Shenzhou keeps Mudd in irons in her quarters and goes down to flog him mercilessly when she has had a bad day. Because that would make Discovery darkerer.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Last week, TrekToday reported that the Harcourt Fenton Mudd (Rainn Wilson) character would be seen “multiple times” on Star Trek: Discovery, and...
