Expect lots of Mudd in Discovery - consolidated thread

Fascinating! I rather enjoyed Harry Mudd, especially in "Mudd's Women" - though as a kid and even today I still have a soft spot for "I, Mudd" but a mix of comedy with villainy works so much better than being an outright cartoonish caricature. That and he should have been nicer to Stella in the first place and not start his drinking problem since she seemed to like calling him "sot"... I wonder how or if they'll write for him, noting how he was in "Mudd's Women" (a pretty great episode involving self-worth, self-confidence, and drug abuse.)

That's a little disappointing if I'm honest, a ridiculous and dated character whose very inclusion has a strong whiff of small universe syndrome. Multiple episodes may stretch his welcome beyond breaking point.

But if their Mudd is a reimagined version who is more interesting and nuanced, I could be persuaded.

Im sure before Batman 1989 came out there were many who couldn't get cesar romeros silly take on the Joker out of their heads.

If it's well done I'm on board. Mudd would be an interesting character if done right.

Harcourt Fenton Mudd is best taken in small doses. He's a novelty. Too much exposure and he becomes predictable.

Don't get me wrong. Harry Mudd is loads of fun. In small doses.

I think that's more of a description of Roger Carmel than of Mudd - okay, making the distinction is pedantic, I guess, except that suddenly it's not any more. ;)

Star Trek is a small universe.

The original Harry Mudd was irritating and stupid, I hate those episodes. But, like everything else in Star Trek things change, so hopefully the new Harry Mudd is different than the old Harry Mudd.

Well, it's the prime timeline so Harry Mudd will obviously be exactly the same.

Right?
"Harcourt! Harcourt Fenton Mudd, what have you been up to? Have you been drinking again? You answer me! You miserable, conniving toad! Staying out all night then giving me some silly story. You've been overeating again and drinking! You need constant supervision. I can see I've got my work cut out for me." ~ Stella Mudd

Yep, good old Harry.

I can't wait to see what they do here. I'm thinking there's going to be some interesting character twists with this one. Could Mudd have just been misunderstood all these years?

I like the first Harry Mudd episode even though it's one of the most awkward and dated TOS shows; I like it partly because it does show so clearly where the origins of the series really were, conceptually. It's an episode of a TV western.

And I like Mudd, because there is no place for him in Kirk's universe...or Picard's, certainly. Dude would steal Quark blind.

Harry Mudd was a funny guy who hugely enjoyed himself...and he was a sociopath who would threaten the lives of hundreds of people and commit something like treason to make a little money or get himself out of a jam.

No one knew how to handle him - the government would send him off to their humane, "educational" penal system and he'd come out the other end completely unchanged.

He was guilty of at least one capital crime - on Vulcan.

Turn three or four like him loose on the Discovery crew. It'll be a lot more interesting and dramatic than Klingons again.

The first time I know Harry Mudd was from the game Star Trek 25th anniversary, and I like his character to an extend that I search his appearance in the series. For me (at that time) Mudd was a part in Star Trek TOS. and Star Trek without Harry Mudd was... lack of something.

But, well, Star Trek 25th Anniversary was my first exposure with Star Trek. I didn't know about Kirk, Spock etc before I played the game. That's why I was confuse, when I found that TOS series was way different than what I saw in the game.

Well, from what I understood from the Trailer, Burnham will be a character with trouble adapting to Starfleet morals... Right ?

Maybe that's why Mudd will have frequent appearances, IDK... He's a Smuggler. He can offer and do things off the books, stuff that the Federation can't. I don't think we're going to see him, as a character, in too much depth. He will serve as the "Space Scoundrel" archetype, a character whose association with Burnham will make those more aligned with Starfleet morals confront her and make her character progress through out the Season.

What I can't guess is the situation in which Burnham (or Captain Lorca, even) will need to do something "off the books", something that requires Harry Mudd's specialty ...

I can be terribly wrong, of course. All we have of Discovery is a 2 minute Trailer.

You never know. A situation could arise where diplomacy takes too long and a photon torpedo makes too much of a mess. You need someone who knows how to play in the grey areas. Someone who has no qualms about getting his hands dirty for the right price. Sounds like Harry Mudd to me.

I feel the same, I was NOT a huge fan of Mudd as done in TOS. I agree if done properly it could be interesting. Something else to wait and see about.

I hope multiple means 2 and not 3 or more. I liked the idea of Wilson playing the mudd character, but of course they'll beat all the novelty out of it with too many appearances.
