What would be a deal breaker for you in Discovery?

I don't want to see a 1960s vision of the future in a 2017 show. When our current tech looks more modern than the shit in TOS that breaks my suspension of disbelief.

I agree and I don't. They definitely should update the tech, but I don't see any real stylistic nods to the era.

So, I'll just consider it a reboot and will kick back with a beer and enjoy come fall.

I'm not a fan of the Klingon look because I think the prosthetics are overdone. But they do still have the forehead ridges so it's not like they're unrecognizable. Their look has been changed before so meh.
Also: Who cares if the stories and characters are good.

They look like a completely different race. I would have appreciated more consistency.

It's a fucking trailer. Give 'em a break.

Trailers are intended to draw you in, not repel you (especially if they are hoping to sell subscriptions to CBS All Access for this show)

Why? Uniform styles can change pretty much over night. TWOK uniforms didn't look anything like the TMP uniforms. All it takes is for some Starfleet head honcho to go "We need new uniforms. Let's go for a new corporate design. I love disco dancing so let's add glimmer stuff."

This is only 10 years before Kirk's Enterprise and only about 5 years after Pike's Enterprise. A little consistency would have been great. Abrams did a good job of walking that line in Star Trek (2009) even though the change in timeline justified changes in style anyway.

I am not referring to style as much as things like the hologram communication. Overall, it just really isn't recognizable to someone who watched TOS.

The Klingons were rarely consistent, until TNG establish them, and then they became more 1 dimensional, with occasional exceptions. Certainly, they would not have been recognized as Klingons in TMP if the ships hadn't been the same and they had been identified as such.

The first episode being broadcast on CBS is more the selling of All Access than this teaser. This teaser is designed to remind people, "Hey, new Star Trek!"

TOS -> TMP.

'Nuff said.

I also prefer JJTrek uniforms but the consistency argument isn't compelling, sorry. We have seen radical uniform changes before from one old movie to the next. When change happens, it happens. One year, German police was wearing green, the next year they suddenly all wore blue. Crazy shit, huh?

You just blew my mind, man...

It doesn't look like the same show. There is almost no resemblance to prior incarnations and that is not appealing. This isn't an effort to "compel" anyone. It's simply one Trek fan's opinion.

Foiled by my own incorrect assumptions!

Reminds me of a great old TV show "Dharma and Greg:
  • Abby (Dharma's mom) Oh, Dharma, 'm sorry. I made a genital-based assumption. (To Kitty, Greg's mom)My fellow gyno-American, please forgive me.
  • I forgive you. And don't ever call me that again.

Fair enough. I'm not entirely happy with the look myself, but stories and characters matter to me a lot more. So I'll obviously give it a chance. If the visuals are the most important aspect to you, that's fine. I don't really feel the need to convince anybody to watch the show.

Indeed. I just don't think there's enough information to conclude about the acting, or how the visuals will work in the show to come down on either side. I will certainly watch the pilot, at least.

Let's call that a win ;)

I'm watching it all. How else can I express my horror and dismay at every little gaffe?!?

BillJ, I haven't seen your thoughts yet on the trailer as a whole, and i'm curious to read them. Any passing comments, sir?

I really have no issues with the trailer. The visuals were excellent and it felt like the Star Trek universe to me.

I AM curious as to why the Klingons are getting another makeup change. But that's a minor nitpick.

For those of you complaining about the acting (in a trailer no less), the acting in ALL FOUR of the pilots for TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT was totally laughable. Then it got better. Well, in some cases. LOL

My point is crying about uniforms and timelines and such, while nitpickish, is all good. We're Trek fans, it's what we do. But acting? Give me a break. I'll wager the acting in this show will be better than what we saw in the other Trek pilots.

After the pilot? Well, I've already seen the entire first season and I can tell you it's great.

If you're a fan of TOS you really have no room to criticize another show's actors.

I kind of don't want to say because it would open up a can of worms... but if Discovery came off as Pro-Trump, that would be a deal-breaker to me. Actually, it would be _the_ deal-breaker.

I'm curious if there is anyone who things that's a possibility?
