Ah . . . no. There's just one reboot in that sequence. It seems like you don't know the meaning of the word.
I'm a computer guy. Of course I know the meaning of the world.

And therein lies the problem with metaphor: it can mean whatever the user wants it to, especially in the context of being an industry buzzword. But if we take the meaning at its most literal possible translation, then The Motion Picture is definition reboot. And so is Khan. And TNG. And so on.

ETA: I'll even add that the common presumed usage of the word in entertainment circles is really kind of a misnomer.

And a stretch to think anyone of normal intelligence could be confused by that trailer. It couldn't be much more linear or simple in presentation.
Correct. What the author is "confused" by is that there isn't giant block lettering spelling out the answer to all his non-essential questions.

THIS IS NOT THE KELVIN TIMELINE

THE KLINGONS YOU SEE ARE A DIFFERENT SPECIES

THAT IS A WOMAN - AND SHE IS BLACK
SHE WILL BE THE STAR, AND IT IS THE END OF THE WHITE RACE

I think this definitely looks expensive - I don't undertstand anyone complaining about effects which will be even better by the time it airs.
I feel the CBS trailer is far superior. I saw the Netflix one first, which I still thought was good - but it really tries to sell itself as a kind of 'rock'n'roll' Kelvin timeline style thing (even to the point of using the font from the new movies, which is different in the CBS trailer). The music choice for the Netflix trailer is just terrible, doesn't work, doesn't elevate the material whatsoever (and I'm not opposed to pop/rock/rap songs in trailers, it just really didn't work there). The CBS trailer actually makes it look epic, dramatic, sweeping, exciting. I'm much much happier having seen that.

I would add WNMHGB, and to a lesser degree post-pilot TOS. Also TAS.

Yup.

In fact, in computing there are multiple levels of rebooting. And, if you know what you're doing, you can reboot certain components and functions while still blabbering about TBBS. So it isn't necessary to suspend function (even temporarily) to reboot a system. Or a fictional franchise.

I'll even further point out that even doing a machine level hard reboot of a Windows ME system doesn't mean it will magically just restart with Windows 10 and new icons and wallpaper.

Anyway, I've spent way more time on this than is rationally necessary. I just don't like it when people say, "You obviously don't know the meaning of a word."

The CBS/Space trailer is definitely better. I'm not sold, but I'm still interested. Some of the lines felt flat but, as several people have mentioned, might work better in context.

I do think CBS is hurting their PR by making it difficult to find a trailer that plays. And if they're required to geoblock by whatever deals they've made, shouldn't Netflix be in trouble for making their trailer available in Canada?

I do wonder if there's an actual "Starship Discovery" in the series? I wonder if Burnham doesn't end up as Captain of the Shenzou?

The fact that Trek never had a proper musical episode makes me sad. I certainly hope Burnham can dance.
I also want the first dramatic lonely scene to be used for Burnham to perform an introspective sad song about responsibility.

Musicals you say?!

Totally not relevant, but the Gary Jules version is one of the few times where I think the cover really is better than the original, and I say that as a huge Fears fan.

I genuinely can't understand why anyone is capable of forming an opinion of the series based on that trailer, aside from a purely visual, aesthetic level.

It was just a snapshot to show some of the characters, the look and the aliens on the show.

I thought it looked pretty Star Trekkie with loads of Trekkie aliens saying Trekkie things. It had Vulcans and Klingons and ships and people shouting on the bridge. On that basis, bring it on. I can't wait to see the pilot.

Agreed. Every new addition to the franchise won't be perfect in the outset. Who can forget, "Angel One," or "Code of Honor," in TNG's first season. They are both IMO virtually unwatchable today. Shit, Code of Honor is even outright racist and misogynist.

Moreover, as a fan favorite of DS9, Avery Brooks went through tremendous growing pains as an actor - his chronic overacting likely from his stage experiences.

It takes a while for any TV series for the characters to grow on you and for the actors to learn to work together well. I for one will give Discovery a chance and it's worth the ~$4 to join CBS Access to do so.

If there isn't someone shouting "fire phasers" and "warp speed" it ain't Star Trek.

That's logical captain. :vulcan:

It would be like Star Wars without the Force!

At the very least, I'm counting on "SHIELDS AT THIRTY THREE POINT OH FIVE PERCENT, CAPTAIN!!!!!!!!" so we can understand how dire the crisis really is.

I've watched the trailer twice now. The whole thread is 37 pages so people must be excited. I am for sure. This trailer has changed me from cautiously optimistic to a really positive feeling about the show, they seem to have a big budget behind it.

They show a lot of visuals but don't give away much. I have to say it looks really well done just on a visual basis. The alien crew members look pretty darn interesting aesthetically, and all the CGI environments look great. To me, it almost comes off as a movie trailer rather than a preview of a series.

I gather the main character is maybe half human half vulcan? Anyway, I'm glad SOMETHING finally dropped. A great start, looking forward to more. It's got the looks, hopefully the writing/acting will back it up once it airs.

Overall I love the trailer and can't wait for the show. Burnham looks like a great character and Martin-Green is well cast. Saru looks intriguing. I like the new look of the Klingons. Really looking forward to this.

However, I think if I have one criticism, it's that the ship interiors look a bit dark, no? I like Starfleet bridges to be flooded with light. All the ships have had brightly lit interiors. It's a minor critique, but it occurred to me. I don't think anyone would want to work in a dimly lit office.
