Thoughts on Burnham's relationship to Sarek

So we now know that Sarek served as some sort of mentor to Burnham (Is that the right name?) in her childhood. What do you want to get they throw a curve and have Sarek be her stepdad?

Unlikely. Sarek is ambassador to Earth, so Burnham is probably a daughter or relative of Earth's ambassador to Vulcan. That Sarek is a mentor to her makes as much sense as Pike being a mentor to Spock (and Spock didn't even grow up on Earth). Won't speculate on what might have happened to her parents, but if she's being raised by Sarek then she is a human learning the Vulcan way because that's all Sarek really knows (much like Worf learning the Human way or the Cardassian war orphans being raised as Bajorans).

I got the impression she was fully human and raised by Vulcans. There's a line in there, something about Sarek kind of mocking her for not being able to properly pronounce the Vulcan language.
I agree, but I guess we'll see. :)

I had both thoughts exactly, I watched the trailer again to see if i could see any slight points on her ears but there aren't any. I think she's just been brought up on Vulcan by Sarek and influenced by their culture. Her haircut and the way she stands (very upright) is Vulcan-ess

^ That's not happening, because Spock is the first/only Half-Vulcan in Starfleet.
^^^^
That was NEVER stated ANYWHERE during TOS' run. It's a common 'fannon' assumption.

As for her relationship to Sarek, I'd say a ward he took for logical reasons (perhaps her parents wee earth diplomats who died on Vulcan, etc. I do like that they have Sarek saying: "You will never learn Vulcan your mouth is too Human..." as it fits in with a dialogue exchange between Kirk and Sarek's wife, Amanda from TOS - "Journey to Babel":

KIRK: Mrs. Sarek, I just don't understand.
AMANDA: Amanda. I'm afraid you couldn't pronounce the Vulcan name.
KIRK: Can you?
AMANDA: After a fashion, and after many years of practice. Shall we continue the tour? My husband did request it.

She seems half-Vulcan to me.
I think she's just wearing her hair in a Vulcan cut, even going so far as to cover her ears so that she appears more Vulcan.

I think that Sarek telling her that she will never speak Vulcan because her tongue is too human really hurt her when she was younger. At least, the trailer is cut to give that impression.

Granted, a "too human" tongue might logically imply part Vulcan. So,

^ That's not happening, because Spock is the first/only Half-Vulcan in Starfleet.

That was never stated anywhere. Please give me a canon example where this is said. There was an urban legen that Spock was the first in Starfleet as Vulcan but that is contradicted in TOS too with a full crew of Vulcans on the Intreprid. Maybe some book said this but we all know books are expanded stories and not cannon

Maybe I'm misremembering details from both TNG and what I've seen of TOS, but I swear the general convention is that Spock was the first/only Half-Vulcan to serve in Starfleet.

You will never learn Vulcan your mouth is too Human..

If she were a full human, he would say her human mouth was an impediment to properly learning Vulcan. Saying the mouth is "too human" means that there is more human than Vulcan, the implication being that she's not Vulcan enough (part Vulcan) to do so correctly.

Plus I see a slight curve to the ears. I still think she's part Vulcanoid (Vulcan or even Romulan) . Not full though.

We'll find out this autumn. Hope to hell she's not another Spock sibling out of the blue like in STV. Say Sarek had a love affair or something while on a ship or Earth or what the fuck ever. I'd be annoyed.

Anyhow - looking forward to the premiere.

Edit:
Spock was the first/only Half-Vulcan to serve in Starfleet.

She could even be a quarter Vulcan. That would make even more sense given the ears/eyebrows. Kind of like that Simon Tarses from TNGs The Drumhead who was 1/4 Romulan.

Look at the picture of him there and compare to her - slight eyebrows, slight curved ears:

I think from her look it's pretty obvious that she's full human. Maybe raised on Vulcan. I'll be honest, I've seen enough "How can I be a real Vulcan"-nonsense in previous shows that I really don't care to see more of it, even with the added twist that Burnham is actually completely human.

The character that Majel Barrett played in the first pilot episode was named “Number One”. She appeared to be cold and logical. Two character traits that they incorporated into the character of Spock for the second pilot.

So having Burnham as “Number One” and less in touch with her emotional side as a human because of her upbringing on Vulcan, it looks to me like a nice homage to TOS.
