TNG, DS9 and VOY all got off to a rocky start to one degree or another. The desert dialogue seems a little awkward but that may just be how it was edited. Everything else looks pretty solid to me.
Possibly, but given the standards of modern TV, things changed. I don't know, maybe it's just a personal fear. After a series like Galactica and the new JJ films, I was expecting this series to leave behind the "cheesy" acting and dialogue...

The "computer enable igniter" scene gave me some good feels like Spock heading into V'Ger kind of thing! I've always wanted to see a bit more EVA type stuff in Trek so this is cool for me.
Yeah, I had the same flashback to Spock entering V'ger in TMP. It sure looks like actual discoveries will play a part in this new Star Trek. Awesome!

To be fair, if you look at most shows you can see in the first few eps actors are still finding their characters. In Doctor Who they never filmed an actors first episodes first, so that they first time the audience sees them they aren't still in the process.

the one quibble i have is that there's no way to denote a lieutenant from a commander on the Discovery's uniforms.

No problem with a JJVerse show, but set it there if that's what you want to make.

Very true, only TOS felt at least mostly complete to me from the beginning and even it had to figure itself out a bit. All of the TNG shows took time to figure themselves out. It will be interesting to see if Discovery continues that trend or breaks the mold.

So what do y'all think of the guy whose species was "biologically determined" to anticipate death? Do you think he means they evolved that way or were biologically engineered?

I certainly hope so! The name Discovery implies...discovering stuff!!

The word "determined" implies a specific decision. So I'd have to say they were engineered.

Maybe they are like those cats that can supposedly sense cancer/disease in people? Or it could be some sort of psychic thing. Either way sounds interesting.

The trailer left me a little cold, to be honest. I've been waiting for it for so long, that I think my expectations were so high it would have been impossible to meet them. Not that I know exactly what they were in the first place. Looks good though, if a little too dark. Don't they have light bulbs in the 23rd century?

And I couldn't give a toss what timeline it's in, I just want good Star Trek. Personally I think Bryan Fuller made a mistake by specifically labelling it as the Prime timeline back when it was first announced. Face it, unless it looks like 'The Cage', people won't be happy.
