Better Call Saul, the TV series

Despite being an Albuquerque resident, I have never really gotten into BCS or BB, for that matter... However, in a recent episode, I guess Chuck's power was out and he was calling out "the bozos at PNM" for disconnecting him... Well, us bozos at PNM, while we can take a joke, found that to be pretty crappy... It would be one thing to call out "the power company" or something like that, but to name an actual business here in NM, much less the largest, home owned and operated company in the state, was not very cool. I know I know.. I should grow a thicker skin, but I'm damn proud of what we do here and this just rubbed me the wrong way. Sorry for venting.. I know it's just a TV show and I need to relax, but it struck a chord. :(

Are you talking about the last episode? The character was lying to keep his ex-wife from finding out that he purposely keeps the power turned off.

We're not too far from Saul Goodman...
In the preview for next week, there was a brief voice-over of (I think) Kim saying "Saul Goodman?!?", almost incredulously. So I think that's going to be coming up next episode.

You do realize that Chuck has been a dick this whole series, right? It's just Chuck being Chuck. I wouldn't take it personally.

Oh. I don't watch the previews so that is a big surprise.

I knew it was Huell when the veterinarian asked if he needed to fit into tight spaces.
Ah, of course. That flew right over my head.

Understood... And after I posted that I realized I was whining a little tooo much.. But it still rubbed me the wrong way and I know a few others here it did too... I'm just gonna let it go. LOL.. :)

Wow, Jimmy killed two birds with one stone. It looks like he's going to get his way again, and he also gave Chuck exactly what he deserved. After all, he was the one who started the whole thing of provoking the other one to do something stupid.

An episode like this is the reason I see these kind of shows in ocations. Deep character development, conflicts that move slowly but surely, everything so that the great climax ends up being even more satisfying...

Because you still clearly don't understand what was actually happening in the scene since you're not a regular viewer, and just went off half-cocked and got offended based on a perceived insult that didn't actually occur. A regular non-reactionary viewer who knew what the scene was about would have been pleased by the fact that the show went the extra length of referencing an actual local power company rather than making some generic reference, because it shows the level of detail and knowledge that goes into making this series.

When Chuck refers to "the bozos at PNM" shutting off the power, he's using them as a scapegoat so he doesn't have to reveal his electrical "allergy" (which is a psychosomatic mental illness, though he isn't aware of that) to his ex-wife, whom he still loves. No suggestion is really being made that they did their jobs poorly, because no power was actually cut off. Chuck did it entirely on his own.

Besides all that though, why would you let the mildest of kid gloves insults from a fictional character bother you? "Bozos", seriously? Even if it was somewhere I worked at, I would think it was cool that my company just got referenced in a TV show.

I hear what you're saying Locutus... I think there's a difference between watching it in context on TV and actually being here... What I'm saying is that people ALREADY think we're bozos... Anytime we talk about raising rates or the power goes out.. It's a perception thing, at a local level.. But like I said.. I realize I went off half-cocked and spoke too harshly. BB and BCS have been very good to the Albuquerque community, by in large.. Bryan Cranston, in particular, has become like a native Albuquerqian. He loves the community and we love him back.

At least you're not PEPCO in the DC Metro Area. Calling them "Bozos" would be a kindness. A cat farting in a tree would knock out half their grid - and that ain't no perception - that's reality!

Fair enough. :)

I empathize with Chuck more than you guys do. He's a man who worked hard and followed the rules to get where he is. He grew up watching Jimmy steal from his parents, lie, cheat, take shortcuts, and not only avoid any consequences, but try to get the same rewards he worked hard for.

Chuck just shouldn't have made it personal and been honest with Jimmy from the start.

This is probably good for him though, now he can get the treatment he needs. He clearly needs help and had to have his stubborn pride busted down to do it.

Just saying, Chuck helps people and Jimmy even if he means to help people ends up only helping himself. Chuck was wrong to try to control Jimmy but he's on balance a far more positive force in the universe.

Hell, Kim has more potential to be a positive force than either of them and Jimmy puts that potential in danger just based on his idea of what she deserves.

How does Chuck help people? He harbors a grudge against Jimmy, who worked hard to get his law degree, and then shuts him out at HHM. He tricked Ernesto, who doesn't appear to be the brightest guy in the world, to tell Jimmy about the recording, and then fires the guy. He's manipulative and controlling and treats people like crap to do his bidding.

Jimmy and Chuck are basically the same person, but they just took different routes to get to the same end. Both are reprehensible people, but they sure are fun as hell to watch.

We don't actually know much about Chuck's law record. Did he defend a bunch of crooks? Was he a leader in civil rights cases? Sure, he's a stickler for following "the law" as a lawyer, but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to the type of clients he took or how much objective good he has done for the world.

All we really know is that Chuck treated Jimmy terribly, so it's hard at this point to have a lot of sympathy for him.

If Chuck never had his neurosis, and he just continued his career normally at HHM, and Kim tried to take one of their top clients from them, Chuck would have done the exact same thing. That isn't screwing over Kim, it's defending your business. Hamlin attempted to do the same thing, just he wasn't as good at it.

I guess it's a philosophical question about whether a lawyer who defends guilty people is 'Doing good', but I'd sure as hell rather live in a place where the guilty and innocent both have talented legal representation than one where neither do. If lawyers were not willing to defend the guilty they also would not defend the innocent who appeared guilty. Also there are some 'Guilty' who would get a far harsher punishment than they deserve if they weren't represented. Just look what's happening now with mandatory minimums. If I am ever falsely accused of a crime, and I just really look guilty, I'll be glad I have people like Chuck to protect me.

Jimmy, well we already know that his enabling of Walter leads to a bloodbath. At this point of the story though, he has done a lot more harm to Kim than Chuck is his attempts to help her. The only human beings who have benefited from his existence are the Kettelmans and only because he was still trying to impress Chuck.

Chuck treated Jimmy terribly starting from the point he passed the bar. Up until that point though? He watched him steal from his parents, and still saved his future when he pooped into a car with children in it. He's not a 'hero' by any means, but he contributes to society, and Jimmy just takes away from it.
