Should Arex and/or M'Ress appear in Discovery?

Tholians, yes, but I wouldn't say the Gorn was a "main" antagonist?

I don't know. The Gorn arguably got more screen time than the Tholians . . . or the Metrons for that matter.

Everybody remembers "Arena" as the episode where Kirk fought the Gorn, not as the episode with the Metrons (who are more of a plot device than anything else).

Honestly, I just had to look up their name because I couldn't immediately reemmber what they were called. "What were those particular god-like entities called again? Not the Organians, not the Thasians . . . the other ones?" :)

I'd like to see their races, but not those characters exactly.
Exactly what I was going say. Even as a host of a TAS podcast, I don't want Discovery to feel like the Millennium Falcon scene in TFA--just a popcorn machine or references and call backs. Now, if Mudd and Sarek (and maybe Tyler) and whoever else we will see, hadn't shown up, sure! That would have been awesome. I'd love to get actual canon backstory on them.

I meant the Gorn in Enterprise, and the use of a CGI character with so little screen time. If I remember rightly wasn't he just found in the brig and had one fight (mostly in homage to Arena) and that's it?

The Tholian was trapped in a medical testing chamber where Phlox tortured it. I thought the Gorn freely roamed the Defiant as a kind of overseer before Archer fought it within a corridor. But then, I never saw the full episode. The UPN affiliate in my cable list was dropped by the time the fourth and final season of "Enterprise" aired. I've just seen segments online.

Possibly, it's been a while since I saw the episode, but the Gorn wasn't on screen for that long. But was still seen as worth creating.

Ah, I heard "Gorn" and my brain went straight to "Arena." Sorry for the confusion.

I think seeing guest/minor characters whose pasts pre-TOS have more mystery to them would generally be better received than a visit from somebody who's fairly well-developed already. Someone for whom you wonder, "what made them the way they are?" or "why did he/she do that?"
