What do you want to see in the first Discovery Trailer?

The same ship we saw at the teaser but with better CGI.
The crew(s) and characters.
Hints of the storyline and direction.
Images of the costumes and props would also be nice.

A closeup of the captain looking angry/mad. The ship taking damage. People running. Aliens firing weapons. Someone making that "sense of wonder" face. The music crescendoing as we get a glimpse of..... something.

Enterprise's first trailer was pretty good as I recall, premise of the show in voiceover, with some generic spacey shots which turned out to be from the Titles, then a bit of a montage of characters delivering cool sounding lines from the pilot and I think episode 2. Nothing particularly original but it made it look fun.

It had The Calling's "Wherever You Will Go," which was also in Smallville and Love Actually. I think this was UPN really yearning for that 'new band every week' to play in the mess hall!

Also there's an obvious error. I bet you can figure it out.

The STNG trailers and timeline are what I compare DSC to, because of the long layoff between shows.

Trailers, especially tv trailers were not nearly as big or important back then but fans of the time did notice them. Aside from some quick 30 sec trailers and an Entertainment Tonight behind the scenes video, the most noticeable trailer for STNG came at the start of the STIV VHS. I kind of like that style of trailer.

Incidentally, there was a 1 min trailer for STNG at the beginning of the summer before it's premiere, and I've never seen it again, not on youtube or anywhere. It's like it disappeared.

This one has even a shot of the movie connie at 0:09 sec. in it... They were quite sloppy with trailers these days... :-D

Yeah it wasn't uncommon to put in existing footage when there wasn't enough for a trailer. So it's not sloppiness, it's intent. Go look at the first First Contact trailers.

My wife and I really loved that song. Came out around the time we met.

You're right. I remember that one.

So I've been following the links on these videos for about 25 minutes now, and I've come to one conclusion: the people behind promoting Star Trek over the years, in all its forms, have been exceptionally poor at their jobs.

They have always tended to pitch it to the already-loyal - less "Hey, get a load of this!" and more "Soup's on!"

Starships that look like ships and not like a golden Dorito.

But that's just me being optimistic.

Exactly! I mean, what's next? A space freighter that looks like a hamburger (with an olive on the side)? Alphabet soup pasta shaped starfighters? A starship with a spoon for a saucer? A space station that looks like a donut?

In one of the VeggieTales videos, there is a starship called the USS Applepies which is basically the TOS Enterprise with an apple pie as the primary hull.

Nothing specifically. Just a sense of tone, style, and character. Some music. Glamour shots of the ship. A release date would be nice, but I imagine we'll just see either "Fall 2017" or "Shut Up, It'll Be Ready When It's Ready."

That's the badger. Still think that's a pretty good trailer, gives the main cast an introduction, a few Star Trek nods like phasers, and sets up the premise of the show. I still remember us dissecting screenshots of it on here.
I did not like this Star Trek: Enterprise Launch Ad 1 launch trailer. I would expect DSC to have a CGI ship exterior and show off the bridge. I also expect to see more than half of the principle actors in it. television is a lot more cinematic these days but I only want to see 30-second trailers not 2 minute trailers...
Of course they will make 2 minute trailers for San Diego Comic Con and also Trek Las Vegas 2017 conventions...
So many trailers to come before the premiere on CBS network. Actually I wonder if we'll have a thread to link to all of the trailers before the launch of the premiere? I'd like to see if they have different International trailers for Netflix? Will Netflix' marketing do their own trailers?
