09 was incredible . it is the best star trek movie and is one of the best sci fi movies ever.
Not quite for me, that honour still goes to TWOK/TMP, though the time gap is so long between them you can't really make a fair comparison between them any more. It's like comparing a classic Ferrari to their latest 812 Superfast Model. Suffice to say it's right up there regardless though.
Into Darkness was a good movie but it was not a good star trek movie in my opinion.
Can see where you're coming from but I think STID is every bit as good as 09, maybe even better. It's certainly more exciting and dramatic.
Beyond is one of the best star trek movies.
This I do agree with, but like the first two I'm struggling to separate the three. Right now, I'd give the nod to Beyond, but only just. They are all excellent in my view.
I think Beyond saved the franchise for most fans both old and new.. Into Darkness was the movie that had the tos nostalgia and the the movie that backfired with fans, add that to the
huge backlash that led JJ Abrams to kind of apologise for how Into Darkness turned out.
This 'backlash' I still don't see in any way, shape, or form bar that poxy poll at that convention that voted it the worst Trek film of all time (worse than TFF, INS? Really?). Into Darkness was well received and the most financially successful Trek movie of all time. Also, I don't see where the TOS nostalgia was in STID either, I thought Beyond leaned much more in that direction. STID had easter eggs and callbacks sure, but Beyond really felt like a big screen TOS outing to me.
Beyond as the least successful of the 3 films has nothing to do with tos nostalgia. many franchise do slump in box office by their 3rd movie.I think if they had made beyond like intro darkness, the box office would have been less than what beyond made.
Guess we'll never know the answer to this.
if there is a new film, I will rather see JJ Abrams come back as the director .
Star Trek Beyond is the film that finally bridges the gap of old and new fans. in a way it felt like tos again but at the same time, the growth with the characters in this alternate timeline was very believable. I dont think the old or new fans felt alienated from Beyond at all.
I wouldn't say no to JJ coming back, but he'll cost even more money this time round. Would he even be interested? I doubt it. He's surely going to want to direct a much bigger film than what Trek can offer him, especially after the mega success of The Force Awakens. Pure speculation though on my part I admit.
Also - didn't you just say above that STID had the TOS nostalgia?
I agree about the marketing too. Paramount needs to promote this franchise like disney does with star wars. if paramount put in the effort. the trek movies should be doing 500m world wide at the box office.
I think they've blown it for this kind of money now. STID nearly got there, and Beyond really should have too, the product was good enough, but it's going to take a major turnaround in fortunes to rescue the franchise from diminishing returns now. It can be done, plenty of other franchises have managed it, even Trek has managed it at points in it's history. I just have zero confidence in Paramount to get the job done at this point. Another 'bad guy of the week' tale and the franchise is done for, Nemesis style in my view.
