What I don't understand about the show being a reboot.

No it wasn't!

As Berman-era Trek is at this moment both 'done' and 'dead', then the phrase 'done to death' is a pretty neat summation.

It might get a reboot in another decade or so. It's only fair to let a whole new generation get their panties in a twist about shit like Data having blue eyes, Odo being gender-fluid, and Chakotay screwing Neelix on a kitchen bench.

I still find a story in the 24th century with a new ship and new characters more interesting than another pre-TOS series with even more screw-ups of established Trek history than even " Enterprise" caused.

And I'm not interested in a reboot of any of the 24th century Trek series, I want a continuation of stories in that timeline.

I was thinking about the idea of the show not being real canon to the prime universe. If that is the case is there a need to just use TOS era characters? If your creating a brand new thing then why not use everything that has been established if you want? If you want to use Picard or data and re-image them then that seems like it would be okay. When comic book movies are made they do't always just go with one particular era when choosing things they want to use. They sometimes pick and choose characters and stories throughtout the entire run of that comic.

I think it;s clear from that one photo that this new show basically is going to be a reboot. I don't mind that myself as long as it's good. What I don't get is the need to lie about or use established canon from the prime universe. One advantage in doing a reboot I thought would be having the ability to do whatever you want , even if it conflicts with canon. Say what you will about the Kelvin universe but they did get some use out of a alternate timeline, such as destroying vulcan or changing the way people were introduced to Khan.

The lie I think is what I think bothers me. It makes me feel like there trying to trick us into thinking the show is something it isn't going to be. They want hardcore fans instantly give the show a pass just because it's canon even if it really isn't canon. They don't trust us to judge the show on it;s own merrits and that bothers me. Maybe it shouldn't but it does.

In what way is it a reboot? And what "lie"?

Did the photo show a post-Original Series Klingon?

If so, that doesn't mean it is a reboot. The original gold painted Klingons just wouldn't cut it now. Plus, as dodgy an explanation as it is, the Prime Universe canon has dealt with the difference.

With a little imagination, it is easy to set up a less advanced ship and technology to fit in with what is already established.

Before Season 4 of Enterprise explained it, I always saw the TMP+ Klingons as they were, a better budget version. They were always the same. In my mind TOS Klingons had ridges, we just didn't see them.

This is exactly the way we should all look at it.

The producers should never have tried to explain it in canon and when asked by fans should have replied with a "what are you talking about? they exactly the same" and just denied it until the bleeting stopped.

But that's not what CBS wants. As far as they're concerned, the 24th century prime timeline is dead.
Then unfortunately CBS and I have total opposite opinions of future Trek sries and in that case I would like to tell CBS where they can put their ideas and where they can go.

Read the novels then.
A good suggestion. Unfortunately they have messed up the different "relaunch" books from the different series very badly so I find no amusement or pleasure in reading them. I would like to read a series about new characters in the 24th century.

Anyway, I still have my beloved Seasons 1-3 Voyager books. I can always re-read them and maybe buy some older TNG and Ds9 books if they are still available.

Not to mention that I have the TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager DVD.s to watch.

But future Trek TV is obviously dead for me.

I don't like the direction that any SF-series are taking these days. Too much doom-and-gloom and downright absurd political correctness.

However, I have no intention to trash "Discovery" in endless posts. I've stated my opinion about another pre-TOS series and that's it. Those who want to watch it can watch it and those who like it can like it.

I feel a little taste of vomit in my mouth.

And you're welcome to do that, for all the good it will do you.

No offense to anyone, but honestly I'm a bit weary of reading about people being upset that the series isn't 100% what they wanted. We all knew up front that a new TV series was going to be somewhat different than what we expected. CBS has proven time and again that they don't view the latter three series (you could also argue TAS in there too since it kinda toils in obscurity compared to the live action series) as profitable or widely recognized as TOS & TNG were. If they did, then we would've seen HD remasters of those long ago despite how expensive the remastering process is. If you also factor in how the reboot franchise has sold for Paramount, it's obvious that CBS is going to think that TOS might be the better direction to go as opposed to TNG since it seems to sell better.

This naturally leaves us with the era of the 23rd century which logically seems to be more popular and has been relatively unexplored in terms of history and by extension is less hampered by canonical constraints. Fuller himself said it was the best place to fit the story if I believe. As much of a nice call-back In a Mirror Darkly was, and how beautiful TOS-R was, the general public isn't going to suspend their disbelief if a new series that's set during that time period looks like something shot in the 1960's. Sure people can forgive the fact that TOS looks incredibly bright and retro because it was a product of it's time, but it's just gonna come off as too hokey if they try to match the aesthetic. Yes, I'm a bit upset the Klingons look a little too alien, but we don't have the full circumstances as to why those changes were made and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Those are pretty much the only complaints I can see that seem to be giving people the impression that this show's a reboot and quite frankly I think they're overreacting. Even within universe, what we've seen of the sets and costumes do seem to be somewhat consistent with what we've seen in The Cage. The Color scheme was a lot of greys and blues and I think the set photos have a similar aesthetic. The uniforms, or at least what we've seen of them, seem to be an updated re-imagining of the Cage Uniforms. That's all it's gonna be guys, a slight update.

I don't think they needed to remaster Voyager and Enterprise because they weren't as um.. unsophisticated as the Original and Next Generation. I would like to think the Show's worth isn't just measured by its production values and budgets.

It's a weird reckoning. I mean by making Discovery pre-Original it is still futuristic but it so hard to wrap your head around it being less visionary. No doubt it will be an adventure regardless, so that should take away some of its limitations.
