News Rapp: Honored To Play A Gay Man On Trek

No. You're not actually allowed to claim gay people are all 'look at me.'

We just didn't hit notify because we're nice.

Admit it. You didn't like my views and ergo me. I get it.

Your first post, and many of the subsequent ones, read as infantile screeching. A whole lot of puff and casting of aspersions, about something absolutely harmless.

You personally? As in the whole package? Don't know, don't care.

I'm sorry if look at me offended. I actually believe it though. It's like there is a need to be recognized to be identified with. To be noticed..

This forum is very intolerant. I'm disappointed at the hypocrisy. To preach about respecting rights of an individual but to show another the complete opposite is bullying. I've learnt something today about selective self-righteousness.

You guys don't walk the walk.
Enough. Drop it or you'll get an infraction. This thread isn't about you.

And everyone else please stop engaging Refuge on this issue.

I wonder if Rapp will sing? It's what made his name.

His counterpart to Riker's trombone, but more compact and less...compensate-y.

Yikes infantile screeching.. so glad you didn't use that offensive word 'needy' or suggest it's about 'look at me'.

Go on, it's funny really.. ;)
Infraction for ignoring mod instructions and calling multiple people "bullies" after being told to stop with the personal remarks by the admin and being told to drop the fight by me. Infraction filed under other after edit. Comments to PM.

Well color me shocked that there was a foot stomping hissy-fit about this topic :guffaw:
Indeed, it is strange that the mere mention of the word gay is so threatening to some people that they have to launch into a multi-page tirade over it.

Now, do you have anything constructive to add about the actual topic?

First gay character without a footnote alien explanation, but yeah I give you Sulu ! That works.

Also a regular character ! Very happy about this. Buffy did it in the 90's and Star Trek failed, a lot to make up for. I like Rapp too!

I hope there's a big, sloppy dude-on-dude sex scene to open the pilot. Chase away the bigots from the get-go.
Not much of a fan of big sloppy sex scenes (hetero or homo) but I'd go for it anyway to meet your goal :)

I don't think Sulu counts. It's a blink and you'll miss it scene that could be interpreted in different ways. We only know the context because we were told about it before the movie came out. Otherwise we would thought the guy was his brother or somebody else connected to it. Movies seem to be doing this a lot, they want to appear to be diverse and make a big deal about having a gay character but the actual scene is so minor that it has almost no bearing on the character. Two very recent examples were Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers.

lol, that's a sure fire way of killing this show's inevitably pathetic ratings before episode 2 even airs.

I don't care about having a gay character at all. However, if they make it a point to shove his sexual orientation down our throats over and over again, it will effectively cheapen his character to being nothing more than a political statement. Star Trek was always about making a statement, no doubt, but it was equally about having characters that were interesting and stories that were entertaining/action packed. Sex scenes are completely unnecessary and frankly are not wanted IMO.

Easy solution for all listed issues:

The sloppy sex scene is a one-off Kirk/Spock cameo. :p

Oaken in Frozen is a good example of the sort of blink-and-you-miss-it that you're talking about there, I think. AFAIK there are no confirmations or denials that Oaken is gay. The adult male in his family in the sauna could be anybody from spouse to brother, cousin, or whatever. I'm only aware of this statement here by the film's screenplay writer:

"We know what we made," Lee stated. "But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world. So I don't like to say anything, and just let the fans talk. I think it's up to them."

(The primary source quoted there is now a broken link.)

Jennifer Lee's statement there is a Rorschach inkblot if I ever saw one: you can read into it whatever you want.

I interpreted the scene to be more about Kirk's reaction to seeing a bonded family situation in the context of his own internal struggle. In my mind that is part of what solidified it as a gay moment for Sulu.
