Are there too many white people in Star Trek?

I think it could be a neat idea. What if sexuality was made a choice? I think most people are at least somewhat bi-curious by nature. What if people someday really did only look at a person's personality when finding a mate? Maybe bi-sexuals have become the norm in the future and hetro and gay people have become the minority.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a procedure that changes people's sexuality. One could be straight for 30 years, then gay for another 20. Then become asexual, or whatever. It's sci fi set in the future, they should be exploring interesting scenarios of how we as humans will change as our understanding of our biology grows.

I'm a member of the human race :p

Star Treks human characters have never been representitive of earth's current population distribution.

As for sexuality, I expect the future will be more Jack Harkness than anything else.

I am intrested in the question from a global scale. I'm not really sure what humanity will look like in the future. I just asumed someone must have done some kind of study to create some possible projection.

Statistically number of white people is increasing in the US, even though their proportion is decreasing. I think this is the trend that will continue throughout this century.

Wait... what? How is this even tangentially related to the OP? Besides that it's just... factually incorrect.

I thought it was relatable to the question of minorities.

Also, do you have a magic ball to see that sexuality will never become optional in the future to make a factual statement about it?

I let @Jayson1 's post go without comment because it was likely at that point that he hadn't seen mine. Let's drop this tangent now.

A better question to ask: "Are there too many HUMANS in Star Trek?" You would think that half the main cast would play the role of "aliens", given the make-up of the Federation...
I've wondered about that as well. I do think the fact that humans have expanded and created colonies sort of address the issue a little bit. Still you would think you would see more aliens. I wonder if there are ships out there were most of the crews are alien. Kind of like the vulcan ship that got destroyed in that TOS ep or the vulcan ship from "Take me out to the Holosuite."

This thread could be re-titled "Is Star Trek the Portland, Oregon of Science Fiction Franchises?"

Realistically, yes there are too many. White people are a minority on Earth even today (proportional to the entire population of the planet), so the amount of white skin on display in the show in the 23rd and 24th centuries certainly is over-represented compared to what we might reasonably expect our species' realistic future to look like. Unless we are supposed to believe that the planet underwent considerable racial 'purification' during the eugenics wars and/or Colonel Green's reign (and the post-atomic horror)....

Indeed. :) I always thought Nick Meyer was having a satirical swipe at this when he had the Klingons bemoaning the Federation being a 'Homo-Sapien only club' in Star Trek VI.

It's also worth pointing out that people may have differing opinions on what "white" is, especially in the U.S. context. Latino and/or Hispanic people are often not considered to be "white", despite many being descendants from people originating from Spain - A European nation. Or Turkish people. Outwardly many look more or less "white", but are often lumped in with other groups of Middle Eastern populations, despite, again, many hailing from Istanbul, which is in Europe.

Also due to other circumstances. There are Australian aboriginals who identify strongly with their spiritual ancestors and practice ancient belief systems, but who are as white as any European (due to their precursors being slaughtered in their thousands; some of the today's tribes feature no 'full blood' Aboriginals.) White skin most definitely does not always equate to Caucasian/European.

On some level it feels like by Star Trek's time there has been some serious intermingling anyway. It's part of the reason I never really had an issue with Picard being a Frenchman with an English accent. I always figured perhaps he simply reflects a mixed heritage?
