Obi-Wan told him that their destinies aren't supposed to intersect. If Ezra told the others that Kenobi was alive, then Kanan would want to find him too, or Rex would, and it'd throw everyone off their intended courses. So I guess he has reason to keep the truth to himself. And Chopper just doesn't care.

Reason isn't always really Ezra's strong suit.

I knew it was really Beru. I just have a feeling that "unused take" in this case might mean "Not the stereo version that everyone knows." (I've become a little obsessed with the mono version of the movie in the last couple of years.)

I just had a quick listen to both to compare and for what it's worth, I'm 99.9% sure it's not the same take used in the movie. Rather begs the question how many takes of that did they have her do? I mean how many different ways can you call the same name twice in a row?

The mono has a MUCH better dubbing of Beru. You can acutally believe it's the same person. It's also the one that has "Close the blast doors! Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!" (which was added back to the Special Editions).

Rather begs the question how many takes of that did they have her do? I mean how many different ways can you call the same name twice in a row?

It's quite normal to do multiple takes of a scene for various reasons -- to try various readings and approaches, to get coverage from multiple camera angles so the editor has options, to retake after flubs or other problems, etc. Also, since the scene was shot on location, that means the audio probably had to be redubbed in the studio in post-production, and it could've taken several takes for the actress to match her original lip sync or delivery.

Had another listen and it's neither of those two. It's the inflection and length of the second "Luke" that gives it away.

Plus, the post '77 releases they replaced her voice with a different actress IIRC.

Ah, ha! It's not an alternate take at all, it's just from a different scene. I've listen to them both side-by side and it sounds pretty identical to my ears.

There is debate about if it's a different actress. But they are very different takes at least. The stereo mix (the one on vhs that most people know) came first but wasn't in many theaters. The mono mix (with IMHO a much better dub of Beru) came second, after May 25. I gather that when sw was first broadcast on TV it was the mono. The record The Story of Star Wars is mono. (Although most of Beru is not on that.)

Any time I've seen the movie projected since 1983 it's been the stereo mix.

I think it's a safe bet that most of the movie was looped, getting clean dialogue audio is especially difficult for location shooting. Indeed I'm pretty sure I've seen Hamill mentioning somewhere how he re-dubbed *all* of his lines. I think it might have been in response to that persistent myth that he yelled "Carrie!" near the end of the movie.

I saw a THX demo back in the 80's where I got to see several scenes from Star Wars, Empire, and Raiders in various stages of sound design. It is amazing how often Carrie Fisher was NOT dubbed. Voice like a foghorn, bless her! Watch the shoot out in the cell bay. Almost any time Leia talks you can hear natural stage noise. Not so for our dashing young men.

Were both Wedges dubbed by the same fellow?

My favorite dubbing is that the "No transmissions were made" Imperial and General Dodanna are dubbed by the same guy. And I think both the Rebel and Imperial announcers during the battle of Yavin are the same guy too! I love those guys!

I got the impression from some article or DVD feature/commentary that part of the reason ANH and TESB had so much looped dialogue was to give American accents to the mostly British supporting cast.

Speaking of C1-10P, I wonder if he decided to stow away on the A-wing himself or if Hera had told him to keep an eye on Ezra.

Reading your post gave me the idea that maybe that A-Wing was where Chopper hides in when he wants alone time, which unfortunately this time Ezra went and stole it while Chopper was trying to take a break.

Also, now he has to find a new A-Wing to make his hide-away.
