Star Trek Discovery at NCC-1701 Shipyard

Thanks for the image link, but I guess I'm not a fan of the "new" design. Painting it brown doesn't help either.

The shipyard appears to be set inside an asteroid, which makes sense, the ships can be 3D printed from inside the asteroid.

I was originally disappointed that they'd picked a design I had been happy to see in the wastebasket. Trying to keep an open mind. Reserving final judgement until final CG. Even if I don't like the ship it won't be a major detraction for me.

I personally just don't like the color. It's distinctive enough they could have made it the usual battleship grey they use for all the other Starfleet ships, but they made it Dorito-er, Klingon Battlecruiser Brown instead.

What bothers me is the poor quality of CGI, it's worse than ENT and that was made 15 years ago. People say that this is unfinished CGI but you'd think if that was the case they would show you how it's a work in progress, maybe show the designers tweaking it. I certainly don't watch trek for it's visuals, except for the reboot movies, but it'd be nice if they looked up to date.

I mean, they looked better in Star Trek: Horizon

Why would they do that? It's obvious that it's a work in progress. The final product won't be out until this fall.

I'm sure we'll be treated to more impressive graphics over the course of the summer.

It's this something that has ever been done before? Releasing a teaser in a subpar quality relative to the final product.

Lot's of the first few trailers for movies have CGI shots that haven't reached the final pass.

Also, in this case, CBS sacked the in house FX team since that clip was made.

It was stated at the time of release that it was just something slapped together at the last minute for a comic-con to show the design. It is in no way the final product.

What if it was closer to our own LordSarvain's version?

Well, that's good, I didn't know that. Normally I avoid trailers because I don't want to see any spoilers.

That is a good looking ship. I like the curve of the forward part of the secondary hull. The nacelle struts are a design Starfleet could evolve to the Galaxy class. I also like the nacelles themselves. They retain some elements we're used to seeing, with the cigar shape adding a nice retro feel.

Just thinking out loud, but the production team missed an opportunity to generate fan enthusiasm by failing to hold a contest to design the Discovery.

Fans are more "enthused" by skillful promotion (teasers, casting releases, etc) than contests. In any case a DISC ship design contest would be 3,000 variations on a central theme (saucer, nacelles) with the "winner" being a subjective choice.
