Does anyone think it would be a good idea to take some shots of the old girl (properly with modern equipment) for an effects redo?
Or perhaps build a new 11 footer?

Building a new 11-footer, to the original specs (and dimensions) but using more modern (and durable) materials would be a great project for someone to undertake.

Oh, and to throw everyone off, then put on the decals of the USS Hood (NCC-1703)

I think they're doing this for James Cawley's Star Trek tour attraction.

Sure; its the original miniature with an appearance as close to the production years as anyone would desire (instead of the horrible restorations of years gone by). It would be a fascinating project to see all of the original flybys, etc., recreated.

You're in for a good time. I went there in October when Doug Drexler was leading tours and I had a blast.

Based on some of those Roddenberry vault clips (haven't seen the actual video). There are some original effects clips still around. I'd like to see those cleaned up and the effects remastered(not changed) with those. If not I'd settle for a replica being used. I'd love for the original model to be used but you can't get all the shots with the way the model looks now. All those shots with the dome spikes, tall bridge, etc would have to be done with a new model anyway.
