Blame you? No Emillia. I can't blame you. Because you are right. For every show that gets it right, 10 don't. For every movie that shows what women or people of color truly are (human) 10 will fuck it up.
But this show has, in terms of casting, already done more right than previous Star Trek shows. So do I get your disappointment on the higher number of men? Yes. But let's also celebrate what is being done right. Hell, if Jason Isaacs' Lorca turns out to be Spanish (someone mentioned that the name is Spanish) the two captains in this show would be non-white. How cool is that??
I'm also truly hoping for even more diversity from this cast, just like you.
Sorry to barge in like this, but since when a spanish person is non-white? Have you ever been to Spain? Because, last time I checked, spaniards are europeans and therefore of (mostly) caucasian descent
I always figured that given what the Enterprise was heading into, the families and non-essential personnel possibly disembarked to the USS Melbourne when Admiral Hanson left and were taken back to a starbase on her way to rendezvous with the fleet at Wolf 359 if they had time. Of course, some ships like Sisko's USS Saratoga still had families on board at Wolf 359, but that could have just been a matter of not having enough time to offload them before they rushed to join the fight and possibly no warp capable shuttlecraft to evacuate them beforehand (though you'd think even dropping them off in non-warp capable shuttles so they could wait for a pickup in a different system would be preferable). That they didn't stop and drop off the families somewhere or separate the ship before engaging the Borg is a command decision so negligent that I like to imagine in my head that the first option happened, off screen.

Indeed, you're totally correct. However, for a lot of people, there's a distinction between caucasian and white. Egyptians for example, are considered caucasian, but I doubt most people who believe in that white supremacy bullshit would consider them 'white'. This is a very tricky subject, and there's a difference between what biology considers 'white' and caucasian, and sociopolitical factors.
For example, the Semitic people are technically Caucasian. Do you think Nazi's consider them 'white'?

"White" expands and contracts depending on the user. It can be as narrow as of British ancestry and as broad as European/West Asian/North African. Most Americans view Spanish people as non-White, for strange reasons. Probably because they confuse them with other hispanics. Most Europeans, on the other hand, don't make that distinction and see Spanish people as White as any other European nation.

Europe has it's own long history of pogroms, genocides and ethnic cleansing, where friends and neighbors have be declared Sub-Human and other. Some with in recent memory. It's a social construct with no real genetic basis. Just merely pointing out general perceptions since I've lived on both continents. These perceptions change over time, for instance the Italians were not viewed as White just over one hundred years ago in America.
In Europe it's been more consistent, anyone of European ancestry has always been viewed as White.
Just pointing out Europe's history in response to your statement about Europe attitude towards "race".How is that a reply to my post? Or did you quote me by mistake?
Europeans don't always view each other as the "same".What is the relevancy of these historical phenomenons to the contents of my post?

I do totally take the point of what you are saying. Most Americans view.....
