Not exactly right! ;)
I happen to like the Kes season 2 hair too. As I've written before, that hairdo were a sort of trademark for the character. It was what made her Kes if anything.

In long hair, she just became another of those typical Starfleet cut-out female characters.

I wonder if they couldn't find a different brand glue to keep the ears and avoid the allergic reaction. Or was that the excuse given and they did want to change Kes from a "child" to "woman" and use the catsuits. After all Seven did go for the cat suit too.

Jennifer looked very cute in her Kes outfits and I love seeing her in them. Whilst I understand wanting to go for a signature "look," even I must admit that her elfish clothes did kind of blur, with their sameness. Her signature style, should've been cuteness, perhaps, rather than faeries, specifically ... exlusively. She's not required to wear a uniform, so to have her dress in a singular pattern all the time, in all her shows does make it seem as though she's only got a couple dresses in her closet and that's all. Kes is fully alien, this is true, but she's also a young woman and would want to dress accordingly. Maybe Han Solo HAS to wear that same getup ALL the time, or it's just "not" Han Solo. But Kes could've been allowed to dress cute in a variety of ways, without "losing character."

Neelix kept the same style in outfits but changed patterns. Perhaps people/aliens of the DQ go with one style but they change their patterns or colors only or Kes picked something she liked and didn't bother beyond it.

There are several kinds of glue including gentile ones that are used on babies and young children. I had read that she was insistant on no longer wearing the ears.

That's cool, to have an in-Universe reason behind it, but I was never bothered by Kes' elfin outfits, as her standard. Jennifer Lien's pretty pixie ways were nicely enhanced and flattered by these costumes. But sometimes, I do get to wondering, "... hey! Wait a minute: didn't they have her wear that, before?" They all look incredibly similar. So ... if, in recognising this, VOY decided to put Jennifer in other kinds of outfits that flattered her physique, then, yeah ... go for it.

But VOY really wants to make sure Kes evokes faeries and imps and elves and whatnot, to help us place her, what kind of alien she's supposed to be. If someone wanted to make the argument of it being overkill, I wouldn't dismiss that. Jennifer was just a slip of a girl, she's got the ears on, the short wig, on ... I'm with ya. You know? I get it. You can put her in a sleeveless turtleneck and a skirt, showing bare legs and I'll still buy her as an Ocampan. With the Cocker Spaniel wig and catsuit, though? That's something else ...

There was one outfit I noticed she wore more often. It was dark blue and the top part almost looked like spider web

In Caretaker, did you notice some of the other Ocampans wore cowls or mufflers around their necks and sometimes covered part of their face or their mouth?

I thought it was just the medical workers
No, I don't think so. When the chief doctor took Harry and B'Elanna out into the main courtyard. It looked like just some people standing around being nosy about the new arrivals. I thought maybe for some of them, it was so the make-up dept. wouldn't have to put fake ears on all the extras. Although some of them had ears showing. The medical staff had the scarves also.

That's probably the reason for it. Much easier and cheaper than sticking ears on 50 extras.

The outfit she did wear the most was the black and green one she had in "Persistence Of Vision".
This is the one I'm referring to

So it was Jennifer's insistence? Why? The ears is what makes her an alien species.

To be honest what separates her from the other aliens we meet through the show for me is the ears, not the outfits but I do like the whole package. She's small, she's tiny, she has the whole fairy/elf thing going and it suits her. Had she stayed longer on the show however, I do expect she'd change her look in a way to reflect her growing age, you know? She'd have to mature from child to young woman before she went gray or had wrinkles.

I don't know why she would have insisted. Perhaps she found them uncomfortable, though she certainly had less to complain about than Roxann Dawson and Ethan Phillips in regards to makep.

In terms of her uniqueness in my opinion the only unique thing about her is her lifespan. Many Trek aliens have pointy ears.

What really makes Kes unique is her personality!

She is nice, friendly and beautiful. But also smart, strong-willed, determined, brave and curious. She also has the ability to move around problems and attack them from another angle if her first attempt fail and she's very succesful in that. By being the way she is, she's both a contrast and a complement to more traditional female action characters like Janeway, Torres and Seven.

Many people compare her to Troi. OK, there are some similarities but Kes is more interesting as character and actually has more guts than Troi. (No offense to Troi who I think is a good character).

All that makes Kes interesting, not some silly short lifespan which actually was a mistake from the writers.

Tuvok can be 150 years old or something like that but who cares? It's Tuvok's personality and abilities that's makes him interesting, not his possible age. The same for Kes!

As for the make-up, neither Dawson nor Phillips suffered from allergic problems.

This describes everyone in Starfleet

I remember hearing Tim Russ mentioning/kinda complaining about the ears in that E! special on YT that they got itchy after a while and he once did scratch them only to end up with a too red ear and makeup all over his hand.

I'd agree on Kes' lifespan but if that was her big uniqueness it'd have been mentioned more. Instead it was her fairness and goodness that was mentioned most with her mental abilities and knack for medicine a close second.

That's true. When I said it's her ears that show her to be alien, I was talking about physical characteristics. I don't remember much from TNG (I liked it but it never gripped me) but wasn't Troi's main function to access the feelings/emotions of passing aliens? If I had to pick one main function for Kes, her mental ability wouldn't be it. Instead it's her sweetness and fairness and ability to think outside the box that separates her from the others.

The short lifespan was shown to have been possible to lengthening if she had the proper knowledge. Wasn't there an Ocampan guy with the female Caretaker who was a lot older than he should have been? Yes, it's feasible that Suspiria had done it but it showed that Kes could look into it if she wanted to. Before hearing about Seven replacing Kes, I had taken it as proof that Kes would stick around a lot longer than the predicted 8 years (since she was 1 year old at the beginning of the show)

I'm sure that if Kes had stayed all series, her lifespan would have been prolonged. There were hints for that, especially in "Cold Fire" where the Ocampa Tanis revealed that he was 14 years old and his father becam 20 years old. Neelix then asked if that technology could work for Kes and Tanis replied: "Possibly!"

That's who I was referring to. The episode wouldn't include those lines if at the time there wasn't some consideration in prolonging Kes' lifespan. Ideally we could have Suspiria show up in the last few episodes, work her mojo on Kes to give her a human lifespan and then send Voyager home. But that's a whole different discussion.

Only question is, would Kes herself want a longer lifespan or did she enjoy being an Ocampan with all that entailed?

No it doesn't because most of the Starfleet Personel haven't got Kes's abilities. Besides that, Kes isn't in Starfleet so her abilities plus her personality makes her unique.
They don't have her mental abilities but other species have mental abilities as well

... Agreed!

Kes' ears are really pretty cool-looking, actually. They're sufficiently 'complicated,' with all their fiddly-bits, that they're kind of interesting. Which is why Jennifer Lien's putting the kibosh on them was sort of jolting. Little changes can make such a big difference, especially in such a short period of time. But once you get used to her long wig, it does make her seem more 'mature.' Like it's just another step in her natural development.

And when Lien was 30, or pushing 30 whilst still on Voyager, you're right ... it might've come across as though she had held on to something too long. Namely her youth - unless she'd modified her image. But for the 3 years that she was on, Jennifer/Kes rocked the elf look. Of the female cast members, Roxann Dawson was the hottest of them. I'm not into blondes that much, really ... but Jennifer was a truly beautiful woman, in her day. Some very good casting on that show ...
