The New USS Discovery....

Yes, I get all my spoilers from random blogs that are just regurgitating fan theories.

Just to point out my theory of the USS Shenzou saucer separation and joining it to a D7 was posted here before this blog.

I'm quite clearly not any sort of insider and the theory is purely a guess. I'm shocked they would post something so close to my theory.

Frankly, the idea that you could just weld together pieces of two completely different ships made by two different cultures is absolutely ludicrous.

I don't know.

I remember playing with it a lot, even if I was disappointed with the scope of it. My brother got it for me one year because he knew I was designing a ship, coincidentally called the USS Discovery, and it seemed like a cool way to realize it. But you could only mix and match a set number of pieces from a set number of classes.

Even though I couldn't make the ship I had kitbashed in plastic, it was still fun to play with allocating resources and personnel to the ships. I remember that it came out before Ezri Dax was a crew member, so I created her personnel file from scratch using biographical data while watching "Prodigal Daughter," when it was new.

If I were to commission an updated version of the program, I'd allow for more of a kitbashing element, where you could mix and match stuff, even if restricted by era, and bend and twist things a bit. Even though it operates in space, I'd imagine some kind of a subspace version of a wind tunnel where you test out the warp field efficiency of the vehicle. Then you could adjust the design based on the results of the tests.

^It would probably be useful to check out if there's a modding community for it, as they might have included some of those ideas already(there should be, it's an old-enough game).

Anyway, back to topic, I'm not buying the Klingon/Federation hybrid starship idea at all. This is 10 years before TOS, with the Federation still in it's infancy and Klingons would be the least of the races besides Romulans who would join forces to make a starship.

Just curious, who here understands that this is a wireframe of the final U.S.S. Discovery design?

If it is (the wireframe), it is pretty uninspired. It makes me wonder about the imagination going into the show.

Cool. So let me ask a bit of a different but related question: If the wireframe 'just happens' to be the U.S.S. Discovery, what do you all think? Love it? Hate it? Just curious.
I'd be pleased, it is good looking design. My only problem are the engines, which are reminiscent of Sovereign and do not fit the era. It would be better with TOS style engines. And of course the rumoured size is completely out of whack. It is a good design for a small agile ship, not for some massive behemoth.

I don't particularly care for it. Its saucer is reminiscent of a ship design that I never liked, and its nacelles are reminiscent of something made by a certain designer whose designs tend to all look the same.

From the untextured model we've seen thus far, it looks like the USS Centaur.

Perhaps 50 years worth of Trek has conditioned me to think of ships with nacelles beneath the saucer and no secondary hull as unimportant guest ships, but it doesn't seem to have the "oomph" of a lead vessel.

The wireframe ship is being displayed on one of the on-set monitors. It's not just some concept art that they decided to show, it's something that's going to be seen exactly as shown in the trailer.

It's not that detailed a model, so it could in fact be concept art or a background ship.
