Why does Janeway look so often flabbergasted in season 1?

at Quark's

Just noticed, after rewatching a slew of S1 episodes, that there are several scenes that go like this:

Kim: Captain, 'we're captured in a technobabblion field that will lead to plot complications, and we will probably fill the next 29 minutes trying to come up with solutions, only to succeed with a last-ditch effort!'

<cue in dramatic music, zoom in on Janeways face, much like this:>

<fade out, go to next scene>

In later seasons we see much less dramatic emphasis in situations like these, there she usually acts more like 'ah, the plot of the week has arrived, helm, put impulse in reverse!'.

So, on the one hand, in-universe I can understand Janeway being inexperienced and gradually becoming more seasoned, but I must say, these early 'overly dramatic' depictions annoy me a bit as well. We don't see it that much in other star trek captains, either. I've rarely seen Picard or Sisko given this screen treatment, for example, though they had their share of problems, too.

Is this intentional, to show that Janeway is still a relatively 'green' commanding officer this early in the series, not yet used to never show to her underlings she's out of her depth in the Delta Quadrant, too? Is it just Mulgrew and direction, still trying to find their footing with the new series? Or is it because she's a woman, and her depiction this early in the series still suffered from stereotyping in direction that situations like these should evoke more of an emotional response in her than in male officers?

Well, we all react different to different situations. Some people can act and look very cool in all situatione while others show there emotions in different ways.

As for Janeway, she didn't have the long-time experience Picard and Sisko had.She was also faced with a situation neither Kirk, Picard and Ssisko had faced, being stranded on the other side of the galaxy. That could also have contributed to her habit of looking flabbergasted or surprised when some situations occurred.

It's the hair. It is pulling up her facial muscles and skin so even the slightest "oh my" feeling has you looking like you saw Abraham Lincoln appear out the front of your ship in his chair.
Nice!!!!!!!

I agree, the hair is part of it. Also, I think she was one of those desk jockeys. Not all Captains have starship or space station command. As for her pre-Captain days on Billings or Al-Batani, those ships may not have been explorer ships like the Enterprise that kept finding itself in strange situations.

Remember...Voyager wasn't meant to be a deep-space explorer

Wasn't the Bonestell her first ship as Captain?
Non-canon....:bolian:
IIRC, Voyager was her first command.
I believe so...first starship command, though she had been a Captain for a couple years. I'd imagine she ran some kind of project on a planetside facility. Being chummy with Admirals suggests she was in San Francisco for some time...

Real world, an officer will have a number of assignments over the course of their careers, not all will be aboard a ship, there will be staff assignments too.

The Intrepid class is a deep space exploration vessel.

Once every episode, Mulgrew would would say to the cameramen "Gentle beings, it's time for my close up." to which they replied "Ok, shocked face.....ready......and action!"

She is really probably under the most psychological strain in the early seasons given her unique situation.

Kate Mulgrew I think did a good job with the material.

I still go for the Bonestell scenario since it seems more believable, considering the fact that Tuvok stated that he had worked under Janeway for forur years and she had never managed to surprise him.

From "Phage"
TUVOK: Captain, may I suggest you consider carefully what you are about to do.
JANEWAY: How do you know what I'm about to do?
TUVOK: I could describe to you in detail the psychological observations I have made about you over the past four years which lead me to conclude you are about to take this ship inside the asteroid. But suffice it to say, I know you quite well.
JANEWAY: One of these days I'm going to surprise you, Tuvok, but not today. I've already considered other options. If Neelix has any chance of surviving, we have to act fast. Red alert. Mister Paris, lay in a course.

That would be a hint that Janeway had at least four years of command experience.

I agree. She had had the constant guilt of stranding the crew, which we saw in Night, she had the responsibility of their safety, and she took it personally when someone died. On top of that she was torn from the man she loved and later found out that he gave up on her. She certainly was under a tremendous amount of psychological strain.

Quit smoking in uniform..
