First look at Klingons in 'Star Trek: Discovery'?

I like how certain users here who don't want to accept that smoothies are canon, due to the Augument Virus storyline on ENT, are now telling other Trek fans to accept a (possible) change in Klingon design they dislike

This isn't "changing and evolving" the Klingons; it's "reinventing the wheel" for no reason whatsoever.
It's one poorly taken picture.
This particular "wheel" is always being reinvented, though you refuse to see it or admit it. The reasons might become more apparent as we learn more. Change can be good. Stagnation never is, no matter how comfortable it might make you.

At the moment we don't know if they're changed for no reason. Maybe they're ancient Klingons as some have suggested. Maybe they're time-travelling Klingons from far into the future. The fact is that all we have right now is one low-quality photo of some people dressed as aliens who don't even seem to have their full costume on yet.

I think they are just comparing the current situation with the time around TMP. Originally it was planned as a retcon and then seventeen years later we got confirmation that the smoothies are canon. The same could happen here.

I think you're misunderstanding some viewpoints here...

All the people here who are claiming that people simply need to accept these are Klingons, are saying ALL Klingons we've seen in ALL incarnations of Star Trek ARE Klingons, no matter what fans might think, theorize or stick their heads in the sand for. ;)

Who?

Whilst I personally see the entire Augment Virus story as a prime example of writers just giving up and pandering to the unnecessary fanwank, who claimed it's not 'in canon', 'True Trek', or stomped their feet and demanded it be changed?

I mean - if we're still here and excited for the next incarnation, obviously the people with issues did 'accept' and get over it. So where's the hypocrisy?

I'm just amused at the "rage" when people don't even know for sure WTF they are looking at..........even the genius that posted the pic says he's not for sure.....

^ Yeah but that's obviously him backtracking after the backlash. As an extra he knew what he was playing. I think it's obvious these are "Sarcophagus ship Klingons" whatever that means.

Do we know that he was an extra? His fb lists him as an art student in Toronto.......might he have just been an intern in the art dept or just on set and not employed on the production?

I think it's worth pointing out, if it wasn't already, that the production crew said they will be putting their own creative stamp on Trek Lore, and even pointed out the nuFilms as an example. If you want to talk about canon, well let's be honest, if they were to stick to "canon" as far as the Klingon look is concerned you would end up with people being spray painted with brown makeup and wearing golden table cloths. The accusations of the producers portraying their adversaries in "Brown face" would get hard to defend after a while.

We have no context for these Klingons. The complaining says more about you than it does the production team.

The context we do have...I.e some other leaked stuff....suggest they could be 'ancient' Klingons. (In their own kind of sleeper ship....) Which makes sense of these designs (as does gluing hair on after lunch.) in the context of that and other tidbits of previous Klingon design or lore (are these the gods that Kahless slew? Fekliri? Worf had a funny spine too....) that tend to not be big in the consciousness of fandom. Same for them fitting in with azetbur and Chang to some extent.

Yeah, if they're supposed not to be standard Klingons but some weird mutants/ancestors then it obviously is fine. And with hair they'd be passable as normal Klingons, although I still don't think the design is particularly good.

One thing I like about them is that the ridge continues all the way to the spine. That's a good idea, IMHO.

Maybe the creative team should check with us before they do anything?

Were you fine with the change in design from TOS to TMP?

Do you prefer this to look like it's a relic of the 60s? Or even from the 80s/90s?

The use of hairpieces to "restore a classic look" appears a bit unlikely since they went to the trouble of covering the sides of the heads in detailed no-we-have-no-outer-ears-to-speak-of makeup...

If there's a story behind this, fine. And it really would be rather odd if there wasn't. Even the Abrams movies didn't dare try anything this different, despite the big budgets and whatnot. There's drive behind this one, for some reason.
