First look at Klingons in 'Star Trek: Discovery'?

It's kind of good that this got leaked. People can get a head-start on the bitching, and will either be pleasantly surprised if these aren't Klingons, or hopefully all tuckered out and resigned to it if they are. :)

I'm still waiting on an excuse for Dax's spots changing all the time. Dame things were all over the place. ;)

I still haven't forgiven Westmore for that..... ;) ;) ;) He ruined Star Trek for me!!! :P

Did you all cry out about that as well?

I wasn't part of the fandom at the time, but I'd bet good money that some people did.

The Trill losing their prosthetics probably caused a few outright aneurysms.

Which, honestly, is a sad state of affairs.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.... Paraphrasing a line from Braveheart: The problem with fandoms, is that they're full of fans.

If some fans can't be tolerant of change, then we should be tolerant of them. Otherwise no one gets to be happy. :)

*whines*

But I enjoy siccing the hounds on them! Now what am I gonna do with these dogs that have bees in their mouths?

Well, some people prefer artistic integrity over laziness. ;)

Didn't the two different species idea kinda fly out the window when Kor, Kang and Koloth showed up on DS9?
Nah, that's easily explained by gene therapy.

In regards to Smoothies vs Knuckleheads, I always had the idea that maybe the smoothies were either cast out by Klingon society because they were considered to be impure or weak.
The reality is that we saw Klingons in only a half dozen episodes of TOS, and all in the same sector. We know that the Smoothies exist because of the Augment Virus, but we don't know what percentage of the species was affected. And we don't know what the characters knew. Bashir was surprised to see Smoothies, but Kirk was never surprised to see Knuckleheads, so the implication is that the Smoothies were a minority who were eventually cured-- so, in short, yes, they may have been relegated to the "slum sector" where the Humans hang out.

BTW, what kind of Beast that the Klingon originated from? Are they reptilian? Mammalian? bug, bird or something else? If they are mammalian, then what kind of mammalian, are they? A lion model, a wolf model, hyena model?
None of the above. They are not of this Earth.

One man's "artistic integrity" is another man's inflexible dogma over canon. I literally had someone tell me that if the producers of Discovery aren't going to do Klingons that look like greasepaint Mongolians, and Starfleet uniforms in velour with little embroidered logos, then they should pick another time period or just quit altogether.

It's freaking television, people. It's a made-up future! It's not like they're re-enacting the Battle of Gettysburg with people dressed in World War II Army uniforms. This series will live or die based on the quality of the stories they're telling, and the quality of the performances the actors give. The rest of this shit is just window-dressing, and this constant obsession over it gets in the way of good storytelling.

But are we sure these are Klingon?

Well one of the reasons I have my doubts, and I'm surprised nobody else has pointed this out is:

a). the makeup obscures actor's features much more than traditional Klingon makeup

b). check out these pictures of the Klingon members of cast - are they really gonna be made up like this?

I mean Mary Chieffo in particular I could see playing a regular Klingon, or a TOS Klingon, but not a cone-headed "Dr Who Draconian" for some reason. One of the criteria of Star Trek makeup in the past was that it did not obscure the actor's ability to act. Hence why Cardassian makeup was so lauded - really extreme, yet obscuring virtually nothing expression wise.

I mean out of those, I could see those three members of the cast dressing up in the first three every day, but not somehow dressing up in that last getup. Every Klingon (if that is what they are) in that photo looks identical.

Bonus image - ENT's explanation for the difference:

That's actually the thing I find most striking about this - that someone would breach an NDA under their own name, and that a "friend" would compound that foolishness by spreading the breach further without even covering up the name.
Exactly. It is very reasonable to assume this whole thing is contrived. Someone's fishing with a license to do so perhaps...

This picture was taken from a facebook page so they’ll probably look slightly different when on film (different lighting etc.).
Their design looks very alien, much more than what we’ve seen in the previous shows. I don’t mind them re-imaging things. That’s been part of Star Trek since the beginning. Just look at how Worf’s forehead ridges evolved from season 1 of TNG up to Nemesis. That never bothered me. Of course I can understand where some of the fan frustration comes from. When producers claim DSC is part of the Prime Universe and you start to change how the Trek universe feels and looks, you’re bound to get criticized. Maybe they would’ve been better off just saying that DSC takes place in an alternate reality (like the reboot movies).

Anyway, I’m just looking forward to another Trek series. As long as the story is good, I’m there.

The fact that the photo is of the costumes and not actors would explain the slender look (and no legs on the one on the right). It also might explain the baldness. Applying hair prosthetics is more complicated (like a hair weave) these days. They can't just slap a wig on them or sew it into the mask like in the old days, so it would make sense that the hair would be applied after the actor dons the suit.
I really hope this is the case. Hair would make them look much more klingony.
