First look at Klingons in 'Star Trek: Discovery'?

There's going to have to be some major explaining involved if they want us as an audience to buy whatever these things are as Klingons, especially since the series has been confirmed to be set in the "Prime" timeline and we know what Klingons looked like at this point in the story and there's no good reason why they shouldn't have stuck to those designs (either the "smooth-headed" Augment look or the "bumpy forehead" look).

Bryan Fuller said last year they were re-imagining looks, that is the explanation. No lore reason, just production.

It's not the baldness that bothers me; it's the fact that these "Klingons" have head spikes that are arranged like mohawks that bugs me and requires some explanation.

A post from Doug Fitz in another group: So no one is confused these are empty costumes on the set around that table with the face attached. Is only one actor in the background wearing his appliance. Worf was in makeup 4+ hours to do the prosthetics, these suits allow the actors to slip into character and reduce makeup to about 30 mins. Pretty much all the new aliens will be using this slip in suits to greatly speed up this process.

If you look at the costumes arranged around the table, this is probably true - they are empty outfits with masks propped on them.

Whether this is for convenience or it's as ol' para mobius says - that this is to speed up the makeup process - is a matter of guesswork.

If you're going to "reimagine" stuff, don't tell your audience that what you're doing is set in an already-established timeline (in this case, the "Prime Timeline").

No one's promised the audience anything that solid. At ComicCon last summer Fuller - a producer who's no longer on the show - responded to a question by saying it was in the so-called Prime timeline but with reference to the exact time and setting added “I don’t think we’re supposed to say yet because there are so many new things about this series,”

That's rather an offhanded answer on which to pin so much expectation.

Giving the Klingons forehead bumps/ridges didn't have any effect on the narrative fabric of the established Star Trek universe as it was and currently is in the "Prime Timeline". Creating an entirely new look for characters that has zero resemblance to anything that's already been established and trying to pass it off as if it's just a "new look" for the Klingons without some kind of accompanying in-universe explanation isn't even remotely the same thing as what was done in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the subsequent 24th Century series because, unlike that instance, it very much does affect the narrative fabric of the established Trek universe given when Discovery is meant to be set.

It's exactly the same thing. Changing the look of the Klingons this time has no more or less effect on the "narrative fabric" of Trek than changing them the first time did.

One could substitute this new look for the previous bumphead design in virtually any Trek episode or movie made up to this point without changing a line of dialogue or a bit of stage action.

Eh...maybe some stray reference to hair or beard somewhere in the last five decades. Big deal.

...and adding forehead bumps/ridges to human-appearing characters doesn't really count as a "reimagining" anyway.
Of course it counts, they changed the klingon look completely with no explanation whatsoever, it's the definition of reimagining the look of a species.

Because "mohawks" and spikes have never been seen in Klingon make up before.

I think I know the reason why some people dislike the new "Klingon". it is because they look slender and thin. Unlike the previous Klingon who look big and muscular

Yeah, I don't need an explanation for why the look different (though 'We don't talk about it' was a good one.) It's just I think that the new design is kinda rubbish. I might change my mind once we get better pictures, but the first impression is not good. The armour looks like a cheesy heavy metal costume and the lack of hair makes them look less feral.

I hope that is only because these are empty costumes and they will look beefier once they have actors inside of them.

What do the TMP costumes look like? ;)
Not-so cheesy heavy metal costumes? Not saying that the previous costumes were perfect or anything, but seriously, this shit is overdesigned for maximum edginess to the point it becomes lame.

I got to be honest, this new Klingon look isn't really doing anything for me. It's not a deal breaker, I'm not declaring raped childhood, and it's certainly nothing as inflammatory as the Kelvin's registry. I just find the look of these Klingons rather meh. I think I kind of preferred the STID Klingon over this, truth be told.

im confused, thought discovery takes placed 10 years before the original series if so, then the Klingon augment virus should have the Klingons still lookin the way the did in the original series or these well b a minor species like the remans.

They'll be Klingons.

The STID Klingons had the best makeup design. I don't think there was anything remarkable about their costumes.
