News John Hurt Has Died

R.I.P. Mr. Hurt. You leave behind a great body of work.
As an aside, I can't believe he was only 39 when he made 'Alien'; he was of those actors who looked older than they really were.

William Hartnell lived to 67
Patrick Troughton to 67
Jon Pertwee to 76.

Sir John did pretty well to live to 77.

We can hardly say he did nothing with his life.

He was a true genre stalwart, amongst other things. It's easy to forget that he appeared as Winston Smith in 1984, or the High Chancellor in V For Vendetta, or a vampiric Christopher Marlowe in Only Lovers Left Alive, or Professor Bruttenholm (pron. "Broom") in Hellboy, or as the Storyteller on TV in Jim Henson's The Storyteller, or that he voiced Aragorn in Ralph Bakshi's The Lord Of The Rings....

... or even his roles as Kane and the Doctor.

It's like a somewhat eccentric honorary uncle has died. So a proverbial fond farewell to a distinctive voice and a friendly presence.

I was thinking about Frankenstein Unbound the other day where he plays a time traveller with a talking car and um, Frankenstein. Weird Corman movie but another SF&F contribution.

As I get older we lose more people that I grew up with and that's hard. When I was younger it was easier to abstract myself from those before my time. RIP

I largely agree with that list but it's a pity Hazel in Watership Down didn't get a shout out at all.

This is a another great loss for the SFF community.
I had forgotten just how many great SFF roles he's played over the years.
I'm glad I've seen a bit of recognition for The Storyteller, it was a great show and I don't see it mentioned very often.

Watching the Top 10 video was the first time I realized he rebelled against Big Brother in 1984, and then basically played Big Brother in V for Vendetta.
