It's actually more than just an entry in a wiki page. "Imperial Starfleet" was used in the opening crawl of Episode V, which I also found on wookieepedia.
It is a dark time for the
Rebellion. Although the Death
Star has been destroyed,
Imperial troops have driven the
Rebel forces from their hidden
base and pursued them across
the galaxy.
Evading the dreaded Imperial
Starfleet, a group of freedom
fighters led by Luke Skywalker
has established a new secret
base on the remote ice world
of Hoth.
The evil lord Darth Vader,
obsessed with finding young

One can do what Earth currently does. Government name + military branch.
What's wrong with Navy? Even if that's not the "official" title for the group, they could just refer to themselves as naval forces, officers, ships, etc?
Would it just be "Navy", or something like "Star Navy" or "Space Navy"? And would the term Navy imply a certain amount of power in the hands of the central government? That was the case in Star Wars with the Imperial Navy.

Anyway, go with one of the presumably not trademarked names that was used early in TOS before the popular name was settled on. I know there was one or two, but offhand I can't recall the names.

Well, it could. It's all in the context and how you present it, and how the main characters react to it. If Navy sounds like too much power then use patrol, solar patrol, or some thing a long those lines.
In fact, it works so well that it has been used a lot:
- Space Patrol (1950 TV series), the United States 1950s TV series with a concurrent radio version.
- Forbidden Planet (1956) featured a starship operated by the Space Patrol.
- Fireball XL5 (1962 TV series) is based around operations of the "World Space Patrol".
- Space Patrol (1962 TV series), a 1962 UK puppet television series, shown in the US under the name Planet Patrol.
- Raumpatrouille, a 1966 German 7-part space opera, known as Space Patrol in English.
- Several of Robert A. Heinlein's books and stories in the 1940s and 1950s featured a Space Patrol, first appearing in "Solution Unsatisfactory".
- "Space Patrol", one of The Simpsons shorts.
- Space Patrol, the original title of the 1977 Gamescience role-playing game Star Patrol.
