News Star Trek: Discovery Delays And Casting News

Here.

Discovery will start filming in Toronto next week. However — and this is the other significant development — the series is no longer going to premiere in May as previously announced. This is the second time the show’s debut date has changed. But while certain creative and production issues were a factor when Discovery was originally pushed from February to May, we’re hearing lately the drama is on track under new showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

This switch has a few reasons behind it, a key one is that recently cast star Sonequa Martin-Green is on AMC’s mega-hit The Walking Dead, which is airing its current season through April. There’s a concern about marketplace confusion if CBS were to ramp up promoting her as the star of a new sci-fi show while her horror hit is currently on the air. The other reason is there’s still a lot of careful deliberation continuing to go into making Discovery special, from the choice of directors, to set design, to the special effects. While May would have been a strong premiere month for the project since Discovery will launch on the CBS broadcast network before moving to the streaming service (May is a ratings surge month), given that Discovery will normally live on All-Access there’s no pressure to fill a specific time slot.

Ohhhhh... c'mon.... please stop playing with the patience of the Trek fandom!!!!
I hope that the new show really kick every science fiction ass in the history!!!

Their phrasing is pretty much implying a delay, but saying it's due to the lead actress being on another show is stupid. AMC won't cross promote Discovery, but you can't tell me they wouldn't be okay with both shows being brought in interviews.

The other thing that bothers me is that they are now casting Sarek. Brian Fuller said existing characters might be used later in the show, after their main characters are established. So now they're casting Sarek? It sounds like stunt casting to me. Should be interesting to see where this goes.

I'm just glad they're taking their time to get it right and that CBS isn't forcing them to rush it to air before it's ready. Could be much, much worse.

"Marketplace confusion"? Sounds like BS to me. What, are they afraid people aren't smart enough to know that Sonequa Martin-Green can be on two different shows?

I hated that part of the article. Why cast her if you were afraid of "marketplace confusion", which sounds really dumb by the way.

Is there any reason to believe this show is ever going to happen? Doesn't really feel like it.
Other than the fact that the first season has been written, cast, and SFX work has been in process for months? Or that they begin shooting next week? Or that CBS has made a deal with Netflix for international distribution?

Those deals are probably contingent on a few things.

Certainly pilots get produced that have some structure in place for distro, etc.

CBS made a mistake announcing a premier date and than a delayed premier date before the TV series even entered into principal photography. I think they should announce a new premier date after at least 2-3 episodes are finished and another 2-3 in post production. I really hope they will not come out with a new date next week already

Most interesting but I thought Sarek, Spock's father died in a Star Trek TNG episode? Unless this is a time before he moved on...

So you guys want to make this new Star Trek special that's fine. I'd say take your time!

When it's ready all be looking forward to the first episode... Hopefully you'll have some time travel in some of the shows.
