Paramount going ahead with ST4 according to Engage

Carol Marcus said:
It's quite clever actually. This fuel container's been removed from the torpedo and retrofitted to hide this cryo tube.

And

Admiral Marcus said:
He put those people in those torpedoes. And I simpIy didn't want to burden you with knowing what was inside of them.

So it was the fuel container and Marcus knew about Khan's crew in the torpedos (which I admit I was wrong about).

I would like to see a stand alone movie of Star Trek .A Star Trek: Birth of the Federation (with new cast). There are many unfilled gaps in the Star Trek universe that would make a good movie.

If Paramount understood how to handle Star Trek, this sort of thing would already be in the works.

Among other things. I don't think the Kelvin films would be as resented in some cases if there was more Trek being produced.
The Kelvin films are kind of tasked with blending the high-mindedness of TV Trek with the forcefulness of movie Trek. So far l think they've done okay handling that (though others would disagree, I know).

I think you're right, though, and I wish Paramount and CBS would either patch in their differences or have the rights given to one or the other so we could stop squabbling over universes.

I do as well. I think that there is so much squabbling over rights that a lot of money is being lost. Also there seems to be an adverse attitude towards risk, which is frustrating to me as someone who wants to see more than the current output, as well as ways to introduce my (younger) children to Star Trek.

But, that's me, and I've blathered on about this numerous times.

I think this is the big thing. Disney gets that Star Wars is something parents want to share with and pass down to their children.

Many Star Trek fans feel the same way but CBS and Paramount don't seem to realize it.

My kids got into Star Wars because they had lightsabers and X-Wings. My kids got into Star Trek because I gave them hand me down toys.

Get with it, Paramount.

The optimism is overwhelming.

As many have pointed out, Star Trek started out on the TV scene and will likely benefit from the more serialized storytelling that focuses on longer character arcs than a two hour film can provide. So, there is the potential, depending on characters that DSC could grow and develop in a lot of different ways.

That's an easy realization to come to, when your only concern is selling product.

Or they realize that Star Trek just doesn't have the same cool factor and popularity as Star Wars does and that the kids in school are talking about Star Wars and not Star Trek. The kids that do want to talk about Star Trek are outcasts.

I think that's not the problem though, I think part of the problem is that Paramount has tried to make Star Trek into something cool and more mainstream but in doing so has taken away some of it's magic.

Who determines whats 'magic' about it?

Within a day of release I had two opinions thrown at me: a 14 year old who was blown away and wanted to be as heroic as the people he'd just seen (and was incredibly disappointed to have no Trek merch in the nearby Forbidden Planet). On the opposite side, an overly critical 30+ year old who couldn't even explain why he hated it other than "in my day...."

Magic is, in large part, determined by the audience. The down side to Trek fandom is that a large chunk of that vocal audience on the all important (these days) social media channels are absolutely toxic, and most of them can't even tell you why.
