DC Comics: Rebirth

There must have been a conflict with the movie.

If a comic book can be blamed for poor ticket sales, it will be.

I'm sure there will be a lot of theories why Wonder Woman disappoints in the box office. The biggest hecklers will say it has to do with a woman superhero as the lead...except Justice League Part One will do just as badly. The people behind the DCEU are incompetent, and there's a point in which people stop buying tickets on the vague hope of entertainment.

If Donald Trump goes to see Wonder Woman, because no one has more respect for women than him, trust him... Oh, they wouldn't have to book out the entire cineplex, because the white house has it's own movie theatre.

Do we know if there is a delay?

Is the Theatre in the white house legally allowed to screen new movies when they are still new, if they pay all the right people and they qualify as a theatre?

And does the White house count towards the final numbers on how well or poorly a movie did.

Yes, they may not be collecting receipts, but it is a screen, and the end numbers are calculated from profits divided by number of screens, to figure out how well a movie is doing.

Apparently the running speculation is that it was because the creators have a history of publicly criticizing some of DC's decisions: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/12/16/the-mary-sue-article-that-killed-wonder-woman/

Huh. I guess it's kinda understandable, even though de Liz kept it relatively diplomatic. Still, outright cancelling a book that's half-way done and is the follow-up to such a well-received one, it also kinda feels like somebody at DC has very thin skin.

The other DC movies so far have been bad, but beloved by the rabble.

Bad movies are profitable, so why risk billions making a good movie that is perhaps unprofitable?

The rotten tomatoes audience ratings for Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad were 75%, 64%, and 65%, respectively. That's hardly beloved, though a lot better than the ratings from critics. Nostalgia and a decent trailor (in suicide squad's case) will pull in decent money (particularly during opening weekend), but I think you're going to see diminishing returns if DCEU doesn't manage to up its game. Wonder Woman in particular seems to me to be primed to disappoint at the box office, but I could be wrong.

I'm living under the unverified conclusion that these movies made money, which means that they are loved with money.

The best sort of love.

Lets look for verification! :)

(Lifetime grosses)

Man of Steel. $291,045,518.

Suicide squad. $325,100,054.

Batman V Superman. $330,360,194.

Hmmm.

Odd.

The Marvel movies are cracking a billion each.

Not so loved, after all?

I believe you're leaving out international ticket sales, but, yes, I do believe the Marvel films have been more lucrative than DCEU despite Superman and Batman beginning with the higher name recognition.

You seem to have forgotten the International grosses for the DC films.
Suicide Squad $325.1 million in North America and $420.5 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $745.6 million
Man of Steel $291 million in the USA & Canada, and $377 million in other countries. for a worldwide total of $668 million
Batman v Superman $330.4 million in North America and $542.9 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $873.3 million
Only four of the MCU films have broken a billion: Avengers, Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Civil War. The next highest is Guardians of the Galaxy at $773 million.
Yeah Iron Man 3 made a billion dollars.

It might be more relevant to see how many multiples the films made in comparison with their publicized budgets (x). Suicide Squad, Batman v. Superman, and Man of Steel made 4.26x, 3.49x, and 2.97x, respectively. That's an average of 3.57x.

By comparison, Marvel's The Avengers (6.90x), Iron Man 3 (6.08x), Avengers: Age of Ultron (5.62x), Captain America: Civil War (4.61x), Guardians of the Galaxy (4.55x), Captain America: The Winter Solder (4.55x), Iron Man (4.18x), Ant-Man (3.99x), Doctor Strange (3.93x so far), Thor: The Dark World (3.79x), Iron Man 2 (3.12x), Thor (2.99x), Captain America: The First Avenger (2.65x), and the Incredible Hulk (1.75x) average 4.17x.

Both studios are likely profitable, but it's not exactly impressive that Superman and Batman movies (characters who have historically been the most popular in comics) are less financial successful (by the above measure) than ten out of the last fourteen Marvel movies.

If you guys are done with the MCU v DCU dick measuring contest, can we get back to the comics? :p

So, has anyone here read LoWW? I have a stack of other comics to get through in queue so I'm in no rush to get it, but since it's Wondie I might be persuaded by a good recommendation ;)

I've read it and liked it. I'd think any fan of WW would appreciate it.

^^
Aw crap, looks like I'm gonna have to cut into my holiday chocolates budget. :D

So, have there been ANY Watchmen references anywhere since the Rebirth special?

There's a theory that
Mr Oz is Ozymandias. And he kidnapped Doomsday and Tim Drake in the first AC and DC arcs.

Other than that haven't noticed any, haven't read the Titans book though, I guess if anywhere some references would most likely be there.

I'm liking the new Superman series-I think Superman kind of got off on the wrong foot with the New 52 version, kind of making him more rebellious, troubled etc. (Something the Cavill movies are kind of doing too, although even they seem to 'get' Superman better). It's kind of funny that they killed him off and replaced him with the post-crisis Superman who of course is famous for being killed off in the 90's. It's also kind of interesting him interact with the sort of same-but-different post-Flashpoint DC.

As for the films, I've heard that Megan Fox might be up for Poison Ivy in "Gotham City Sirens"....which is interesting since she was also in the Jonah Hex film if I recall....(Although that's not part of the current DCEU)
