Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I really hope he's not baby Groot the whole movie. I didn't find the baby groot thing particularly interesting or "cute" at the end of GOTG, and I really don't want to watch baby Groot throughout the whole movie. It feels like a little joke that they've only kept going because it sold merchandise. Besides that, the trailer was pretty good. I liked the scene with Mantis (I'm assuming it was mantis), it was pretty funny.

Again, as opposed to the rest of his body?

Anyway, I'm sorry guys, I didn't mean for the helmet thing to turn into such a big tangent. I was just being nitpicky, and clearly I didn't think it through all the way. :p

That was an amazing trailer.
Love Baby Groot, and the whole thing with the bomb.
The part with Rocket shooting while BG is on his shoulder is a fun call back to the prison break from the first movie.
"Showtime A-Holes" is a great new catchphrase.
The end bit with Mantis is hilarious.
I was hoping we'd get at least some kind of glimpse of Ego, but they must be saving him either for the more story focused trailer or the actual movie.

Well, that was a phenomenal trailer. Drax's bit at the end had me howling with laughter. I don't think I felt as warm and giddy watching a trailer as I did for that one in quite some time.

So what do you hope he'll be for the rest of the movie, if he's not Baby Groot for all of it? And why?

It doubt it has much to do with merchandising. Most of us think Baby Groot is adorable and loved that bit in the first movie. I fear you may be in the minority there.

Never underestimate the power of Cute! :)

I kind of hope he just goes back to being normal sized Groot. I like Groot, and I want to see him do Groot things like helping Rocket beat up bad guys, and just generally be cool, instead of getting into hijinks as Baby Groot. It was fine as a one off gag, but that's not the character. If he's Baby Groot throughout the whole movie its not like it will ruin the movie for me or anything, but it will definitely be a mark against it.

I want to see the Guardians of the Galaxy, not most of the Guardians and then one George Lucasian (I don't care if that's not a real word) mascot for the little kids. I don't want Groot to go from being awesome to being the Ewok of the MCU. As a small scene and a gag or two, Baby Groot is ok. But the normal Groot is the interesting character, in my opinion.

We must have watched different trailers, because the one I saw, he was doing both of those things.

I only saw Baby Groot having hijinks with Rocket. If they showed normal Groot, I didn't see it. I'll have to rewatch the trailer.

Edit: Ok, I wasn't crazy. I just rewatched the trailer, and there was no normal Groot in the trailer. In fact, they even introduce the character as "Baby Groot" when they do the character title things about halfway through the trailer. So yeah, as of right now, based off this trailer, it looks like the normal Groot either won't be appearing at all, or at most he might show up something near the end to do the normal Groot things that the cutsey version can't.

@kirk55555 There is a clear sequence where Baby Groot f***s up a baddy with his extending arms. He's still very, VERY capable of kicking some ass. ;)

And besides, if he had been normal Groot straight away, that would take everything out of his sacrifice. "Oh, he can just regenerate within a few days? Big deal then....." He might not have known he could re-grow. So yeah, him still being a baby makes more sense.

One of the best trailers I've ever seen and the movie is looking like it will be the number 1 hit of 2017. Baby Groot is going to steal the show and Drax's laugh at the end was infectious.

Trees take dozens of years to grow to full size. Don't worry, he'll get there eventually.
Next movie we have pre-school Groot, then Kid Groot, followed by Teenage Groot (that's gonna be a good one!) and then in part 17 he is the one you know and love again already! :guffaw::adore:

<pinches the bridge of his nose>

Let's me quote the relevant part of what I originally quoted.

Having Baby Groot ridiculously beat up guys isn't the same thing. Its just lame hijinks, like having him be too stupid to know which button to push. Its just stupid, and in a movie where Ego the Living Planet isn't actually a planet and has a human kid, this movie is pretty much already filled with its quota of acceptable/forgivable stupidity. Its junk like Baby Groot that takes a movie like GOTG 2 from enjoyably goofy to annoyingly idiotic.

It really doesn't. If GOTG moves like every other Marvel movie, its been at least a year since the events of the first movie, possibly more. I'd give Groot a month to regenerate to full form, but I bet he's had at least a full year. He's baby Groot for the same reason teddy bears helped defeat the Empire, it sells toys and makes 4 year olds happy (and I say that as someone who doesn't really dislike the Ewoks). I guess at this point I should just happy he's not going "Mesa Baby Groot" :shifty: In the end, I know comic Groot regenerates pretty quickly, but Gunn pretty obviously hates the comics so that doesn't matter. But, even ignoring that, it makes no sense for Groot to not be regrown by now. The "sacrifice" moment was them thinking Groot was dead. Since he didn't die, he doesn't need to stay a baby until Gunn stops making GOTG movies just to show "consequences", especially since that's obviously not why he's still Baby Groot anyway.

I'm still interested in the movie. Its gone down my list of movies I want to see next year, but I love the MCU. I even like movies like Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 a good deal, so even if it looks like GotG will be about the same quality as IM2 or Thor: TDW (if not a bit lower), I'll still like it well enough. Although I hope Gunn moves on after this, I'd definitely like to see a Marvel space movie made by someone who likes the Marvel cosmic characters (not just GotG, but people like Nova, Moondragon, etc) a lot more then Gunn does.

Exactly. It would have been a cheat if they'd just had Groot get back to being himself right away. Heck, even Spock needed a movie or two to get back to normal after dying . . ... :)
