If we haven't seen it already, it cannot possibly exist. We can start by complaining about why an astromycologist is on the show when none of the previous star trek's ever had one on board.

Wait, there are people renowned for studying fungus?
If you throw in a splash of red wine too, it's really pretty good.

It's definitely an oddly specific role for the character to have, but it bolsters my working theory that Discovery's mission is to find a cure for the Tarsus IV crop blight (which was caused by a fungus mutation, as I recall).
The Tarsus thing took place twenty years before TOS; Discovery is set ten years before TOS.
If you consider The Cage to be the start of TOS, it works, since that adds an additional ten to eleven years.
I just checked the wikipedia page, just to be sure, and it still shows as May 2017.Crap - I missed the second missed start announcement - what's the timeline now... did it shift from May as an air date at all?
I was referring to November as the start date for shooting. Okay that was never confirmed but before Fuller left it seemed likely. What concerns me now is that December seems unlikely as everyone will be taking Christmas off from work so filming may only start in January. It's still May, not sure what captainkirk is referring to.

Having a fixed start date forces them to actually get things done, even if it's not their original plan. The reason Dr. McKay was in Stargate Atlantis was because they ran out of time to find an actor for the scientist role and so they went with a pre-established character and things turned out better for the show. Why would that even be a problem? Most shows only start filming about 8 weeks before their season goes to air. Other Trek shows have been the same too.
