Your Pet Celebrity Hate

For me a part of what makes me strongly dislike a celebrity is based on how often they show up in stuff I do like. I can pretend the Kardashians don't exist completely if I want to, they don't show up in anything that interests me except as the target of parody ridicule. Bruno Mars did a freaking Superbowl halftime show. Every time I go to the Amazon front page or Newbury Comics I have to see that album cover with him sitting in that douchey pose.

As much as I hate Super Bowl halftime shows (which are almost always fake, i.e. lip-synched), at least Bruno's drum solo was live.

DL Hughley for me.

For me: George Carlin after about 1990. He was funny before then; after it, he just turned into a bitter, angry old man.

For sure.

Nowadays I largely avoid following current events, whether on tv or online. If I do come across "news", it is usually several days or weeks (or months/years) old.

I do notice once all the current hype and mania is stripped away, the "celebrity" thing is no longer an issue. It becomes more like watching or reading some mundane "history". (Like watching a boring "documentary" on Jackie Kennedy or Marilyn Monroe, etc ...).

In practice I find the hype and mania surrounding something "current", is insidious and frequently very addictive.

(Long tangential rant).

Over the past several years, I came to the realization that current hype and mania have been heavily coloring my thinking when it comes to stuff like celebrities, movies, tv shows, purchasing decisions, etc ....

More than a year ago, I more or less stopped buying superhero movies. At the time, this was largely due to price of Disney/Marvel blurays retaining their sky high prices and not tumbling very fast (in comparison to Warner/DC, Fox, Sony, etc ...). Eventually I ended up watching most of these Marvel movies (ie. starting with the 2012 Avengers movie) when they started showing up on basic cable channels with a 2+ years or so delay. After two years or so, the hype and mania was largely gone. That's when I came to the realization most of these movies were kinda crappy or "average" to watch. Not the sort of stuff I would want to watch a second time.

More recently I haven't been watching my current tv backlog in a timely manner. So I ended up watching current weekly episodes several weeks later after their original broadcast. With most of the hype and mania gone, I came to the realization a lot of current tv shows on my backlog were either really awful or just plain difficult to watch. (For example, such as The Blacklist).

In the complete absence of hype and "newness" mania, a lot of stuff turns out to be rather mundane or outright very boring.

I don't hate any of them, but Tim Curry's very existence is an irritant and makes me want to punch him.

I liked Curry in The Hunt For Red October. He made a very convincing Russian. Probably the most "mainstream" role he's ever played.

Although all that Rocky Horror crap DOES grate, after awhile. I used to work in a theater that was showing it at midnight. Had enough after about a week.

I don't actually hate anyone, but I seriously can't stomach Kanye West. There's just a woefully disproportionate ratio of ego/boastfulness to talent/worth... astoundingly so... like arguably the greatest chasm of it in the history of show business. Hasn't anyone ever told this guy he's too useless to be going around thinking he's so magnificent?

For some reason I have always disliked Leonardo DiCaprio. I agree about the Kardashian family. I wish they'd just vanish into obscurity.
And Donald Trump.
I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) about Leo... I have never liked his work. One-note actor who plays each role the same way. His personal life, too, just rubs me the wrong way.

The Kardashians, anyone in Housewives of _____(fill in blanks), the public for watching their shows and buying the magazines and feeding the hype.
