For the Zetarians, I speculate that Fred Freibeger said "Let's save some money on special effects and just shoot some film of my blinking Christmas tree lights!"
But was it the same barrier is all I want to know?

I don't think the special effects of the Zetarians is really any worse than any other alien of the series IMO...although there are some weird ones out there!

I was never a big fan of this episode anyway. The concept of the Medusans is an interesting one, but watching Larry Marvick, Kirk and McCoy go off their nut over Miranda Jones makes me want to 
. She is a highly intelligent and accomplished woman to be sure, but she is also emotionally distant, cold and not very friendly. (Thank heavens Spock and Scotty have some sense, and finally McCoy begins to see through her!). Marvick must thrive on rejection, I guess....

Agreed. For the time period and budget, I think the special effects companies did a great job. In this episode I also like the concept where each individual has a different area of the brain attacked.
Scotty's groin? You've got my interest! Tell me more.
In star dates chronology The Enterprise was heading towards the edge of the galaxy in Day of The Dove and that would be the episode before ITITNB (Despite Scotty's hair going back to the black oil slick look) so it could be the galactic barrier as the ship was in that general area anyway! But it's never actually identified as such is it!

Maybe Scotty was getting ready to do his Elvis impersonation act in the Deck 5 lounge:
"Welllllll, since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell........"
HaHaHa I could never understand why they'd show Scotty episodes out of order especially with his gooey black hair and his flat top grey! Surely the fans noticed something!

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Scotty have 3 different hair styles in Season 3?
I remember a James Doohan interview from a long time ago. He said that at the start of the third season, they combed his hair straight back "and it looked like hell." Then they styled his hair to look more modern, and he liked that much better. I'll try to find where that came from.
