Well, two things are for sure now. In nominating and electing Donald Trump, who ran on the platform that he did, Republicans can no longer style themselves as the party of family values, moral superiority, whatever. That is over.

And anyone can become president now. Anyone. It no longer matters what they say and do. If the voters want "change" they have proved that they don't care about someone's character.

No, I suspect middle america realized that using an imperfect hammer is better than no hammer at all. The perfect hammer was never going to come.

All hammers are imperfect, but this imperfect hammer is promoting the philosophy of take the hammer and knock it over the head of Mexicans, Muslims and anyone else that does not look like yourself. Divide and rule politics works every time. The brown working & middle classes are not the enemy, the rich man at the top is and yet people don't see that we keep voting in the rich man at the top. SMDH

It's safe to say that most of us on here are worried about what will happen to various minority groups under Donald Trump. Two groups of particular interest are Muslims and Hispanics, especially Mexicans.

I've always disliked the conflation of undocumented immigrants with Hispanics, a pretty terrible opportunistic bit of rhetoric, and don't see how Trump or the Republican Party would harm Hispanics. Trump does seem, however, indeed pretty hostile to Muslims, hopefully the Congress will really be able to deter extreme and especially unconstitutional actions.

On the positive side, there could be some compromises on immigration control and gun control and we could see some substantive or at least nonpartisan debates on NAFTA and the TPP and I think it is valid that our allies in Europe, Asia and the Middle East aren't giving enough assistance so we could have different relations for the better.

I sincerely hope that you “Don’t get it”. That the Democratic Party continues its slide to the left and fully into the “Hate America” group that are now rioting in the streets. That you and the Elite Media continue to brand ordinary Americans that voted for Trump as Racists, Homophobes, Islamaphobes, Fascists, etc. At least have the class that your candidate displayed in losing. But no, better yet continue your leftward slide into oblivion. The drubbing you took in 2010, 2014, and 2016 will seem like good times when 2018 rolls around and your representatives who are somewhat moderate have to run for re-election in Red states get creamed. The destruction of the Democratic Party brought on by the arrogant far left policies of Obama will be complete. All that will be left is the looney left fringe now taking over the party.
Is the left making up the KKK and other racist groups celebrating? Is the left making up all these reports of racist attacks on people? How much more you are going to ignore this?

This is so easy it is becoming boring. The sun is shining outside. Get out of your mom's basement and get some fresh air.

Ah, ignoring it then. It's so much easier than admitting there is a problem. But like an alcoholic, either you do or it consumes you entirely.

Some further historical "fun" facts:

The economic crisis of the late 1920s left a large number of the German population unemployed and with little prospects for the future. Hitler and the NSDAP appeeled to these citizens by promising to limit foreign influence on the German economy and put Germans back to work. It is a reasonable assumption that many of those giving their votes to the NSDAP were not actively racist, but merely dissatisfied with their personal economic situation, and they were willing to ignore the anti-semitism and racism of Hitler and his party in order for "change".

The day after becoming Reichs-chancellor, Hitler made a speech broadcasted on radio, taking on the "14 years of Marxism" that preceded him becoming chancellor. For those not knowledgable enough, the governments of the so-called Weimar Republic were anything but marxist.

After the end of World War II and the Third Reich, many, many Germans proved to be in denial over the crimes against humanity Hitler and the NSDAP had committed.

The same Democratic Party that ran a staunch neoliberal this year? That Democratic Party?

Curious that you think people protesting in defense of human rights hate America. Makes me wonder what you stand for instead.

That you and the Elite Media continue to brand ordinary Americans that voted for Trump as Racists, Homophobes, Islamaphobes, Fascists, etc.

Hey, we're just basing it on what Trump and his own advisors and supporters have said and done.

At least have the class that your candidate displayed in losing.

Ah yes, the familiar right-wing canard that the appearance of civility is more important than justice. Where were y'all when Obama got elected?

But no, better yet continue your leftward slide into oblivion.

And it's leftists who hate America, huh?

It's coming out that the Democrats as well had probably more popular votes in the House and Senate races, and Hilary Clinton could have a 2% lead when all votes are counted. However, these additional voters will come from Democratic-heavy states, like California.

As this keeps happening, chalk this up as one of the reasons the left is angry.

The destruction of the Democratic Party brought on by the arrogant far left policies of Obama will be complete. All that will be left is the looney left fringe now taking over the party.
That is almost word for word the rhetoric used to analyse the Republican party when it was in such disarray (and possibly still is but for Trump whom the party expressly didn't want until he won):
The destruction of the Republican Party brought on by the arrogant far right policies of religious fundamentalists and the Tea Party will be complete. All that will be left is the loony right fringe now taking over the party.
So it seems that whichever party loses the most recent election can just plug in the right words, and there's no real claim to basis by either party. It's just nyah nyah, polarization, and neither takes the long view.

Ah, ignoring it then. It's so much easier than admitting there is a problem. But like an alcoholic, either you do or it consumes you entirely.

With Clinton demolishing Trump in actual number of votes this post puts me in mind of the last candidate to win the popular vote but not the presidency.

Al Gore made a movie about an inconvenient truth.

We are seeing exactly that in action ever since the result including the post you quoted.

That Trump built his campaign on racism, bigotry, xenophobia and hatred is undeniable. You voted for Trump, you voted for these things. I see a lot of Trump voters complaining about being called a racist.
Well boo bloody hoo. You voted for a racist, that means you condone his racism, some directly, some in a roundabout way.
The whining going on about people not liking being labelled a racist is pathetic, don't like it ?
You shouldn't have voted for Trump then.

I sincerely hope that you “Don’t get it”. That the Democratic Party continues its slide to the left and fully into the “Hate America” group that are now rioting in the streets. I don't think that of all Trump voters. But here is the question: Are racism, nativism, white supremacism, anti-semetism, anti-Islamism etc. going to have a new home in the Republican party? Those kinds of things have been off-limits to both major parties since the '60s. Trump has won and he is now the leader of the party, he could have easily made a definitive public statement that those elements are not welcome in the GOP and his administration will not support them nor the kind of discrimination they represent. Instead, he has given a top post to someone whose media business has catered to those very elements. That's not a good message to send if one wants to be seen as "president for all Americans."

No, I suspect middle america realized that using an imperfect hammer is better than no hammer at all. The perfect hammer was never going to come.

Good analogy. People who know what they are doing understand very well that using the wrong tool can frequently make things worse than they were before.

There are church goers and there are Christians. Plenty of the former, the latter are harder to spot.
True, unfortunately. The form is easy; the substance is harder, but I find it more rewarding. And less hypocritical.

[...] the arrogant far left policies of Obama [...]
:guffaw:

Only in America could Obama's policies be considered "left" at all, never mind "far left". Dismissing policies that endeavour to treat all people decently and don't promote division and discord as "leftist" and therefore wrong is pretty sad, but evidently division and discord is what some Americans want for their country. That's beyond sad.
