Everyone, take a deep breath and settle down. I've been around for a good many of these presendential elections. This is not the first time that people claimed doom and gloom and threatened to leave the USA before we all became oppressed and downtrodden.
Like every other candidate before, most of the promises will be broken. The boastful rhetoric will be silenced. The government will slog through the days ahead just as it has all the days past. Trump will not single handedly destroy the nation, even with a Republican majority in the house and senate. We've had those majorities before - both with and without a Republican president - and the nation somehow survived.
I strongly lamented what I felt was the absence of a truly viable candidate from either major party. Clinton carried a lot of baggage from a lot of bad situations. She may have had some experience, but I don't believe her performance in previous offices, whether elected or appointed, was particularly noteworthy. Does poor performance in previous positions trump (pun intended) no experience in the political arena at all? Apparently not.
I find it odd that so many point out the lies of Trump while so few were willing to accept that Clinton was a highly practiced liar as well. There were quite a few rumbles about Clinton's racist attitudes as well. It seems that those were kept under wraps while Trump seemed to lack the filter to avoid spouting them in public.
My gravest concern is the continuing divide in America. The nearly 50-50 split in popular vote is evidence of just how wide that split is. But even worse is the extremism. So many seem to be either so far to the left or so far to the right, that they fail to understand that the middle ground is where we need to be. Both the Republican and Democratic parties have adopted that same extremism - "If you don't lean far enough our way, we're not letting you in - we're not lending you our support." It may be the chicken or the egg problem - did the parties do this first and the constituents followed, or did the populace drive the parties that way?
So, there IS much to be concerned about in regard to American politics. But it's the politics of the society, not any one individual. Trump, and Clinton for that matter, are merely symptoms. I fear that we all played a role in bringing them upon ourselves. Are they truly the best this country has to offer and why are we willing to accept that?
