Here's what I'm watching to get ready for Discovery

This is kind of a quasi-reply to this thread - http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/what-episodes-films-are-you-watching-in-preparation.283791/.

I meant to reply to it when it was first posted, but I really am a spacey person and just forgot. And I know it's frowned upon to revive old threads, so I just thought I'd make a new one.

Anyway... despite the woes the show is having getting off the ground, I'm still hopeful Discovery will be good and am really looking forward to it. And while this is completely subjective since I don't know anything about the show's premise other then it's a decade before TOS and it'll have a female lead - I just simply can't help myself!! ;)

TOS - The obvious first choice. I've been averaging maybe four or five episodes a week. Yeah, I've seen every episode of TOS at least once, and many of them several times, but the show just has an amazing rewatch factor to it. And since the main reason they chose to set Discovery when they did was to do a TOS-style show, I think you obviously should start here - specifically with the two pilots.

DS9 (later seasons) - It has been said that Discovery will follow a more serialized style of storytelling, and the later seasons of DS9 are perfect examples of how great Star Trek can be if told with quality serialized storytelling. Of course, I realize the actual premise of Discovery will probably have nothing to do with DS9, but I still think it's a great way to wet the appetite. **Note** If you've never seen DS9 before, I do recommend starting from the beginning, but the serialization doesn't begin until the later seasons.

TUC - I actually pop this movie in maybe two or three times a year anyway, I love it that much. Before he stepped down as showrunner, Bryan Fuller said many times that this movie is somewhat of a benchmark for what they're doing on Discovery. I'm sure that's still the case.

Fringe - This is a total wildcard and probably not necessary, I admit that one. Hannibal used to fill this slot just for an example of Fuller's current showrunning and writing style, but with recent events in mind Fringe is now here. The reasoning is basically because Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman were producers on it. Plus, I've never seen it before, believe it or not. So I figure...what the hell!! :)

The Expanse - Another wildcard - BUT it's filmed at the same sound stage Discovery will be filmed at, and the show is FANTASTIC. And it's a great example of what a serialized TV space opera could look like in 2016-2017. And it's FANTASTIC. Did I mention it's FANTASTIC? #Fantastic (Yes, I know, hashtags don't work here.)

There you have it. Please understand that this was NOT intended to be the official "Here's what you're supposed to watch!!" list. It's just my personal viewing list and completely subjective. You can certainly make a case that random movies and TV shows like Robocop, 3 Men and a Baby and You've Got Mail can prepare you just as much for Discovery as what I've mentioned as we simply have no idea what this show will be like. It's just 'my' personal viewing list and nothing else.

May the Schwartz be with you.

See now, you're going about this in totally the wrong way. None of that stuff is truly going to prepare you for Discovery. There's one thing and one thing only that you need to watch. "The Cage." Because according to official sources, Discovery takes place in the prime timeline ten years before TOS, which is when "The Cage" is set. So DSC is going to look and feel EXACTLY like that episode, right? Because if it looks, say, completely different from "The Cage," then we as the loyal Star Trek fan community must boycott this abomination of a show because they promised us one thing and then lied and gave us another.

So my advice is to watch "The Cage" every day from now until May 2017. Scrutinize EVERYTHING from that episode, from the uniforms to the hairstyles to the sets and props and even that television set in Pike's quarters with his little captain's cap on top. Because THAT'S what will prepare you for what you'll be seeing in seven month's time.

I know you're just being snarky and making fun of me, but... DONT TEMPT ME! I JUST MIGHT WATCH 'THE CAGE' EVERY DAY UNTIL MAY!

But seriously, I get all of that. I addressed that in my original post. I specifically stated that I understand that we know next to nothing about the premise of Discovery, and that what I'm doing is pointless - but that I just can't help myself. If anything, I was just being a little facetious. I apologize if I wasn't clear about that.

And I apologize if you thought I was making fun of you personally. That wasn't my intention. I was actually making fun of someone else...;)

Err... I'm watching Beyond again when it's released over here November 21. No viewing plan prior to Discovery.

Does that make me a bad Trekkie?

Not watching, but reading. Since they announced an astromycologist called Lt Stamets, I think reading Paul Stamet's book Mycelium Running could be a good prep for all the mycological references and Treknobabble.

I wanted to watch all of Trek, but that seems somewhat unrealistic at this point. The plan was to watch it in chronological order, starting with ENT and ending with NEM.

I'm only six episodes away from completing ENT, which is breaking my heart and reminding me just how robbed I felt when the show was originally cancelled. I think I'll move straight onto TOS after that, and get through that shows movies too, before taking a break ready for Discovery.

With all the Netflix shows coming back for new seasons soon, and my usual US network tv shows coming back from their Christmas breaks, trying to get the whole franchise viewed before September just seems unlikely.

I'm rewatching TOS episodes on the 50th anniversaries of their airdates, Season 1 should end in late April which would have a been perfect tie in had Discovery kept the May date.

That's all the Trek I intend to watch prior, don't wanna oversaturate my brains :D

There really is a lot of good TV out there today. I'm like 3-5 seasons behind on everything I want to watch. Damn First World Problems!!

That's a pretty good list. Mine's roughly similar with the addition of Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon (Michelle Yeoh), catching up on The Walking Dead, RENT, and Hellboy.

I wrote that in November, and if I did it now it would probably have the titles you mentioned, aside from The Walking Dead, which I already watch.
