‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Cast Includes Klingon Captain, British Doctor and More

Christopher Eccleston did also star in a zombie apocalypse movie, only he wasn't a doctor (WHO or otherwise) and he certainly didn't try to stop it. In 28 Days Later he played a military officer who basically used the collapse of civilization as an excuse to be a douche, much like the villains in The Walking Dead are doing nowadays.
Haha. Right. I think I combined the two movies in my head. I like Capaldi's Doctor, but unless Discovery would let him constantly swear I stand by Eccleston.

Am I the only one who would prefer to have relatively unknown actors in the show, who happen to surprise and make names for themselves?

He didn't get to swear as the 12th Doctor, though it makes for some great clips combining the two.

But, I'll tae Eccleston too. Until Capaldi, he was my favorite Doctor.

I wouldn't be opposed to this, "relatively" being the important word. The network isn't going to green light a actor with promise but zero track record.
I still think Ross Kemp would be an awesome captain, imposing figure but often seems very friendly and down to earth.
If the focus is going to be on the first officer with the captain being a somewhat less in front character, maybe we could move away from that person being a "captain friendly."

Someone more like Captain Jellico who has more of a hard command style and sharp edge? This would serve as a contrast to the first officer who would be easier going.

If we're casting from Eastenders, there's only one logical choice.

I had this image of a gay Klingon. Needless to say, I can't write here what I'm laughing like hell about.

If you've been paying attention, you may have already seen one:

Admiral Krell from ENT's Affliction/Divergence. In the ENT relaunch novels, Krell is gay.

Not really a big deal after all, is it?

nah. 'cept I see him in a pink tutu, prancing around, and claiming to be a warrior.

I would tend to agree with this point. It's almost a good cop/bad cop type of situation, where the Captain is the harsher disciplinarian or authoritarian of the ship. It makes the XO a more accessible officer, someone who the crew can approach.

This, perhaps, may be best illustrated by U-571, where Matthew McConaughey plays the XO and the crew is much more willing to approach him with questions than the Captain, played by Bill Pullman.

Bill Paxton, actually.

Just because the Federation and the Empire are enemies ten years later doesn't mean they are during the time of Discovery.
There had been "almost 70 years of unremitting hostility" between the Klingons and the UFP leading up to TUC. Of course, that obviously doesn't mean there were never situations where certain Klingon and UFP crews/individuals worked together for mutual benefit under specific circumstances despite this enmity. Indeed, we saw exactly this happen more than once in TOS/TAS, including in "Day of the Dove" and "The Time Trap" for example.

Wasn't Worf the supposed to be the 1st Klingon to serve on a federation ship?
I can't recall any reference to that in TNG, kind of like the old one that Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet.

There no reason to think Worf was first.
Doesn't Worf say he was the first Klingon in Starfleet in "The sword of Kahless"
From "The Sword of Kahless" (DS9):

WORF: I ran away into the mountains. I was without food or water for three days. But there, in the caves of No'Mat, Kahless appeared to me in a vision and told me I would do something no other Klingon had ever done. After I returned to Earth, I pondered the meaning of his words and wondered what lay ahead for me. When I was old enough, I joined Starfleet.
JADZIA: Something no Klingon had ever done.

But as others have said, there is no reason to think the Klingon captain is that of Discovery herself.

I imagine not many Klingons do run away to the mountains and start hallucinating that the Klingon-Abraham is instructing them to (sorta) defect. In the grand Trekkian tradition, there's always wiggle room!

;)

Yep...that post turned out to be just as rock-stupid as I'd predicted.

"Kor, you slag, leave it!" instead of "Klingon commander, stand down and lower your shields"?

Might work.
