I'm pretty sure that no one here said that term limits are really good at protecting against dictatorship.
People are saying, however, that they are a protection against dictatorship. Its a very simple premise. I dont see why its so hard for people to get their heads around it. I realpy dont get why its being met with so much resistance.

Term limits for the US president came about in what 1951? So why before then were they not needed and after that needed?

I think that is exactly what @JWPlatt is suggesting.
Which makes you wrong.
If term limits are so good as a protection how come they don't apply to say US Senators as well as the US President. If people truly support term limits you might as well go all the way and impose them on every single politican no matter if it's at Local, State or Federal level.
Because I like apples but having them for every meal to the exclusion of all other nutrients is unhealthy.

It has already been covered in this thread that it was in reaction to FDR where people felt his Presidency was overlong.

Republicans in Congress felt his Presidency was overlong. He died at a 70% approval rating and rarely dropped below 50%.

Obviously enough of the electorate felt he was doing a good enough job to elect him 4 times.
It seems this portion of the conversation has gone circular and has basically ended because it's already been covered in this thread that some politicians (not necessarily FDR) do shitty jobs but the stupid electorate keeps them in office anyway. How many times they've been elected is not a reliable measure of quality.

There is no reliable measure of "quality" because different people want different things from their politicians.

You might think politician X from district Y sucks, but his constituents keep voting him in. Does that mean he sucks and his voters are stupid? Probably not--just means they have different priorities from you.

Lol. This is hilarious. I dont know why people cant get their heads around the fact that term limits are a protection against dictatorship. That is literally all I am saying and all I have ever said. I didnt say they should be kept or should be gotten rid of. I didnt say they worked or didnt work. I didnt say there werent other protections.

God help me.

So if you think term limits are a protection against dictatorship then doesn't it follow you think they work and they should be kept?

Yes, a dictator would simply change the laws and give him-/herself "legitimacy" that way.

Nice try, but Executive Orders (which are perfectly legal and used by every President) can't repeal an amendment.
