Bryan Fuller Stepping Back From Showrunner Role on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

I was never happy with Fuller as the showrunner so I don't mind seeing him go, but I'm not sure about the new people. Are they any good at writing/producing?

Variety’s sources reported an alleged strain between CBS and Fuller over the production of the show, particularly Fuller’s ability to devote his full attention to the new series.

Wasn't it predictable from the beginning, 8 months ago when they appointed Fuller? It appears not and in September, CBS decided to push the Discovery premiere from Jan to May 2016 in order to "give the team more time to work out stories and ensure sufficient time for production of visual effects". Now, it's Fuller who steps down as showrunner. What's next?

Anyway, the shooting is supposed to begin next month and still no name for the female leading role of Lieutenant Commander.

The editor of Collider.com tweeted that Fuller was "pushed out" because of what he wanted to do (creative choices/direction?)...

my biggest concern about @BryanFuller leaving new STAR TREK show is he was pushed out for what he wanted to do.

That just... hmmm...

What I don't get is: Fuller's said publicly that being in charge of Trek is *THE* reason he got into the business. And now, when he gets it, he can't do it because of "time" issues to other shows?

Who the hell puts any other project in front of their "dream" job??????

Guess "American Gods" is actually more important...

As for length, I'll admit: I want more episodes. But I don't need 22 or 26 anymore. I don't even need 20! I'd be happy with 16 episodes, like "Walking Dead" does. It is a "happy medium" IMHO. 13 or, worse, 10, is too few.

And while quantity/quality are not an overlap, and fewer episodes has been said to make a show better over all, I ask you to go through Trek's 725+ episodes and delete more than 100 -- or even 200! -- without really hurting it overall.

26, 24, 22, even 20 episodes is too much.

But 10, 12, 13 are too few.

16 = Goldielocks zone, IMHO.

Not that I expect this change will affect episode count at all. Except maybe retaining 13 instead of decreasing to 10 next year as Fuller said he wanted.

Akiva G. worked on such gems as I am Legend, Angels & Demons, 90s Lost in Space, and let's not forget

Sure, just like he remained active in Dead Like Me, what with his executive producer credit on it. :biggrin:And Orci was still actively exec producing Beyond
Which doesn't mean much because DIS is a different production from those you listed. Even within the industry, the role of an executive producer is somewhat ambiguous, with those credited having varying levels of involvement for each production.
They always say the person is still involved. They always still give the person an exec producer credit. At least until the fired producer sues them, like Darabont in TWD. It's in the contract. It's face saving to avoid the appearance of a troubled production. It's usually bunk.
Some executive producers are more involved in a show's creative process than the showrunner, whose main job could be merely ensuring each episode is delivered on time and on budget. In some cases, the reverse is true. It's not uncommon for producers to assume different jobs or even leave a production altogether. While it's easy to say "the show is troubled" when that happens, it really happens more often than not (but it sure makes for good entertainment news headlines, though). I think every Trek series have had some producers come and go or assume different jobs than they had originally.

Yes, Akiva Goldsman worked on the dreadful Batman movies, but why do you forget the rest of his career? I think I, Robot was pretty good, A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man great, the Fringe episodes he has worked on are among the best of the series, Underground is a pretty good tv series ... I don't see a problem with him. He has worked on some crappy stuff, yes, but since than he worked on some pretty good and great stuff too.

Whoever is in charge of this at CBS seems to suck at their job.

Pushing Fuller out for not meeting their timetable expectations after hiring him to build the show from scratch only 8 months prior to air date just seems colossally stupid.

I'm really confused as to what they were expecting here?
They're apparently willing to put so much money behind this show, yet they expected to just slapdash it within a few months and put out whatever...

More episodes =/= better.

Good shows in 2016 do not have more than thirteen episodes a year. Hell, even thirteen is pushing it.

You don't know the drug I am after.

2 years between episodes of Doctor who, and 3 years between episodes of Sherlock and seven years between episodes of Red Dwarf... Okay, mentioning Red Dwarf is pushing the issue, Sorry.

You assume I want a massive 10 week high followed by 40 weeks of nothing.

Kcuf that.

I want 30 episodes each from four complimentary series overlapping each other till the whole damn year is wallpapered with Star Trek, that don't even need to be nearly as good as Pushing Daises, so that I won't have 40 to 116 weeks of white knuckle withdrawls, ranging between numbness and intense rage, wondering where the next gnikcuf episode is.

Elementary is 108 episodes since September 2012.

Sherlock is 10 episodes since July 2010.

Kcuf quality!

I NEEEEEED quantity.

Given Fuller made it clear from day one that he wanted to make Discovery solely for the special snowflake brigade, perhaps, after the gay Sulu debacle and subsequent tanking of Beyond, CBS have seen sense. Although, that said, I have no faith in CBS to deliver quality product when it comes to Star Trek, especially given how it's allowed the 50th anniversary to disappear as if it never existed.

CBS and the new movies are only tenuously connected.

CBS probably wants Paramount's movies to tank.

Thereafter they will have a monopoly on all the Star Trek in the market.

I just hope CBS allows Akiva Goldsman to work his magic again:

Alfred: Can I persuade you to take a sandwich with you, sir?
Batman: I'll get drive-thru.

Mr. Freeze: You're not sending me to the cooler!

Mr. Freeze: What killed the dinosaurs? The ice age!

If that's the case, then they are condemning Trek to death. Making it for the "old white guys who shake their fists at clouds" brigade is a recipe for disaster.

I saw plenty of 50th anniversary stuff. Pretty much in the vein of the 20th, when there were only movies being made.

It's quite sad to see some dismiss Fuller as the "old guard".

This is a guy who's made and wrote numerous critical darlings over the past decade and is also a big fan of the original show.

There's a huge difference between a guy like Fuller who just got his way into Hollywood as a junior writer on VOY for a few years and a guy like Ronald D. Moore and/or Brannon Braga who quite literally spent most of their careers molding and forming Star Trek in their own image.

This was Fuller's chance to do exactly that. I'm not disappointed in CBS or Fuller for stepping down, I'm just disappointed it had to happen. Regardless, I think it was the right decision. I'd much rather see a show that's on the air with half his creative input than a show that would likely never air with all his input.

Are you seriously suggesting Beyond tanked because of a 5 second clip implying Sulu is gay?

Have you visited the planet Earth at all?
