Can't Help But Notice The Similar:

In_Correct

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
A first season episode of TOS has The Squire Of Gothos, named Trelane, very similar to Q! I already mentioned Armus (which so far I have noticed Armus has nothing to do with TOS) but Trelane looks like Q.

And not only that, but also this episode seems to have inspired TNG's Hide & Q. There was a small scene where Q ... Trelane ... in Squire Of Gothos put Picard .... Kirk ... On Trial, very similar to (or not that different from) Encounter At Farpoint. Otherwise it is extremely similar to Hide And Q, and other beings at the end of the episode forced Q .... I mean Trelane away because he was not permitted to bother the crew of the Enterprise ... NCC 1701 Original.

I was delighted to see a mischievous being in TOS!

Too bad that they didn't bring him back. He would probably be more enjoyable than Harry Mudd.

And in Season 2 Episode Obsession has Jean-Luc And Wesley I mean Jim and Junior Garrowvick, Jr..

very similar situation where Jim was involved in Garrowvick's father's (Captain Garrowvick) death. The only difference is that Captain Garrowvick was in command and from what I remember Picard was in command. Otherwise two men responsible for two other men's deaths and both deceased men leave a son behind (and in the case of Jack, he left a wife behind also) Now Junior Garrowvick, Jr. is under the command of Jim just like Wesley being under the command of Jean-Luc. I have always considered Wesley to be the godson of Jean-Luc (otherwise I would not agree with Wesley given many privileges and taking over The Enterprise all the time.) but I then decided to consider Wesley the godson of Jean-Luc ... and now also Junior as the godson of Jim. They even had a "I knew your father." conversation at the end of the episode.

Another remarkable scene is when the two fought over which one would be bait for The Creature. After they fought they seemed to both decide to be bait together. That moment was beautiful. Or at least great acting by Shatner and Brooks.

I had also noticed in TOS Films what looks like early inspirations for The Borg, Will & Deanna, and even The Ferengi. But as I am paying very close attention to TOS episode after episode, I never realized that there are similarities dating back to TOS Series!!

Anybody else agree or notice anything else similar?

The big question: why would a Q need machinery to do his tricks as Trelane so obviously does (as revealed when Kirk shoots out the mirror)?

I think the point is that they were similar characters and that one influenced the writing of the other. In the real world. Or so it would seem to John de Lancie, and maybe there are some more verified sources besides his speculation. Though I tend to agree with his speculation. As far as making them the same type of lifeform, I don't buy into that, regardless of what a novelist said. Trelane's parents did not seem very Q-like at all, and it has already been pointed out Trelane used technology. If people want to speculate and debate the idea they're welcome to, it's what the board is for after all. I've never been one to look for in-universe explanations for real life/production issues such as changes in Klingon makeup or Roddenberry rehashing an old character.

The technical reason for Klingons looking different is because of a makeup and costume problem. The first episode of Klingons (with those apparent "Non-Violent" but secretly powerful race of people) had a decent Klingon while the non-speaking background characters had terrible makeup.

The next appearance is when Scotty was suspected of murder. That was a horrible look.

The third appearance, "A Private Little War", has a different Klingon that has the original eyebrows and shape of mustache and beard and now with thicker hair.

But only in the first appearance (so far ... I am watching Season 2 and I am enjoying the music!) they have the "TNG Season 1 Worf Sash".

If only they could just find larger bulkier actors to play the part of Klingons in TOS instead of the very slim Klingons they wouldn't look that different.

As for an in - universe reason is that they were probably altering their bodies to pass as humans so they could spy on them. (The Trouble With Tribbles)

I don't think that Trelane is a Q. But Q is perhaps somewhat familiar with Trelane playing with Jim and performed similar games on Jean-Luc. Q could have familiarized the events shortly before Hide & Q.

I just got done watching By Any Other Name. Scotty looks at a drink he cannot remember the name to and just says "It is green." Doesn't Data also do this?

Yes, in the TNG episode "Relics." It was an intentional homage/tribute/in-joke/whatever.

Well considering that William Campbell is now deceased I doubt we'll ever know the truth as if he was really a part of The Q continuum or just another kind of energy life form!

Possibly because Trelane is VERY young for a Q- a baby even, and needs help to focus his power.....
Or what we are witnessing at that particular part of "The Squire of Gothos" is simply Trelane exercising his abilities to perform feats via mechanization, whereas the full scope of his abilities is considerably vaster, and will be especially once he matures.

Why would Campbell know? He didn't create Trelane or Q. It was an one off part he played.
