Luke Cage-- Marvel/Netflix

I'm on episode 9 now. Good stuff so far.
 I'm way behind. I'm about to start episode 3.

The show isn't as stylish or as musical as I thought it would be and it's probably the most street level and grounded piece of work in the MCU but it's very much Marvel on Netflix and I look forward to seeing where it goes. I have some expectations concerning Misty and I want to see if that pans out.

I think that first episode had the most skin on display that we've gotten so far in a Marvel production.
They tried to outdo last week's Agents of SHIELD and succeeded.

I'm enjoying this a lot. As an aside, I have to say that I'm really glad that Misty isn't an unbelievably young detective. I really hate all the 20ish looking detectives we get on television, especially when they're women.

I'm seven episodes and loving every minute of it.

I figured Pops was going to die fairly quickly considering how little we saw of Frankie Faison in the trailers.

However, I was completely floored (pun intended) by Cottonmouth's death in episode seven! That was more shocking than Luke suffering from the Judas bullet at the end (largely because it had been built up for the last couple of episodes). Looks like Mariah is going take over the criminal mantle now that her political career is in ruins.

I love how Luke Cage is following Jessica Jones' lead by including so many veterans of The Wire. Not only is Frankie Faison in it, but both Michael Kostroff and Sonja Sohn (as a NYPD captain, no less) show up, too. Is it too much to hope for to have Dominic West and/or Lance Reddick to show up as detectives in Iron Fist and/or Daredevil?

For those who are familiar with the comics, how close is the show following his background and origins?

I don't follow the comics but I do know this much. ;)

Carl Lucas was never a cop and he never served in the military, but he was framed for a crime he didn't commit, was sent to Seagate prison, experimented on, ect;...

Trish!!

This show makes no bones about the universe it's connected to.

I think that the people who complained about the previous shows seeming unconnected to the larger MCU will appreciate Luke Cage. This show feels more closely connected to the larger MCU, more on an Agents of SHIELD level, rather than Daredevil or Jessica Jones.

Six episodes in, and there have been mentions of Tony Stark, several of Justin Hammer and Hammer Industries (which is apparently still in business post-IM2) and several mentions of "The Incident" and the "Green Guy" and "The Hammer".

A plot point that depends upon the larger movie universe is...

...the bullets made of alien metal (although the Chitauri aren't mentioned by name).

It takes four episodes to get there though, so people have to be patient. Then the MCU stuff starts trickling in, then pouring in later on. I just finished episode 9. Gonna finish the rest tomorrow. I think this is the fastest I've gone through a 13-episode season and it's been good so far. Lots of interesting developments and unexpected turns.

Luke needs treatment and there we have all the science, the tech in a fully outfitted lab and a cooperative doc. Awfully convenient.

I don't think this is a spoiler but I read at some point there's a reference to President Obama. Even though Ellis (William Sadler) is president in the MCU. I read you could maybe Ellis took over from Obama after his first term (maybe after the events of "The Incident", if they must call it that.)
I haven't seen the episode in question so I don't know, just wonder if it was a mistake or not.

Just a heads up for those of us getting near the end: I went ahead and created a spoiler thread so those that those that are behind can still come here and need not scroll through whole pages of spoiler tags. ;)

I'm on episode 7 right now and damn do I love it, a bit of a slow start but absolutely worth it. Right up there with the best of DD an JJ!

Considering most of Netflix's shows are slow burns that take advantage of viewership's tendency to binge, I don't think that's too much of a worry. I've seen numerous reviews specifically regarding Orange is the New Black that wouldn't be quite as beloved if it was a weekly show.

I think the slow start is a bit easier to accept when you approach these kinds of shows as 13 hour movies rather than 13 1 hour long episodes. When you have 13 hours to tell your story than it's understandable that you'll want to take your time.

^ But it doesn't fall into its groove as a Marvel show right away. That takes a few episodes.

And about the name-dropping, some of those felt like they were referencing movies or comic books rather than things that were happening in their world. Not a complaint, just an observation.
