I actually saw a 'trope' named after B'Elanna and I can't find it now. It had to do with believing an actor to be more attractive as an alien than he or she was in real life. It was something I found by accident, didn't bookmark it.

That's a shame, it would be an interesting read. Sometimes I wonder if in many ways it's an outgrowth of the orientalist stuff of the Victoria era, all caused by the biological reproductive urge to seek out different genes to improve our children's chances of survival.
Sometimes, to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a sexy alien is just a sexy alien.

Interesting that Roxanns forehead is covered, and Jeri has her left eye tilted away from camera and hidden hands...while Kate is clearly in a commanding and closed pose. There's even a seperation between the established people and the new girl.

See..even the photographer is channeling his understanding of these people through the lens of the characters they play.

I think you're reading things in this picture that may not have been put there in the first place.

Does Jeri have the smallest cup size?

That must have pissed off the other two.

"Why does the stupid internet keep going on about how huge Microboob's boobs are?

Tom needed a corset by year Seven.

He was quite open about it. Weight gain happens.

Just like Will Wheaton was open about having to wear the muscle suit..(don't know how happy Michael Dorn was about Wheaton outing him on that... or Frakes for that matter.) I 'think' Frakes might have worn a 'corset' as well but am not sure.

Nah it's all there, it's the kind of thing you are supposed to do when composing an image. Definitely in the period this photo was taken.

A lot of the men talked about having padding and corset type things as did the women. People from all of the casts have discussed this

These things are bad of course, for men I mean. Because your body is still ugly, it just doesn't appear to be to other people. IMO, it's best to keep in good shape and wear non constrictive clothing, it's healthier too.

Thing is, you have to do that on a TV shooting schedule. Shatner was a health fanatic, and at one point lived on nothing but fruit salad....and even he starts to expand by the end of a given series. 24th century people are also all pretty much supposed to be perfect specimens (though with some of the guest stars you start to wonder if there is some steampunkish movement celebrating anachronistic bad hair, and being generally a bit 'ugly' for fun.)

Mind you, it's not as bad as the comics...everyone was like an anatomical reference in some those. Thank god the actors didn't have to look like that. (Or wear single breast exposing swimsuits on the holodeck...lovely artwork, very imaginative, really told a story about body attitudes in the 24th century...but can't see it flying on TV. I cannot find the issues of TNG for the life of me though. Shame, I remember the waterfalls on the holodeck being quite awesome. Very much in keeping with part of Genes Dream at least.)

I would also add that the saying "the camera adds 10 lbs" holds some truth. I have seen actors at conventions while the show was still on the air (not voyager) and was surprised at how slim they looked

Imagine how fat they look when they're filmed by three or four cameras simultaneously!

It amuses me, how Kate has it in her contract how she has to wear a corset, rather than the studio providing a small gym for the main cast. Tell me you wouldn't take FULL advantage all of the services that a FREE gym could provide! The only reason I could see for not establishing that kind of setting would be injuries. If Kate pulled a hamstring, or some shit, now how's that going to affect production? At the same time, it's worth the risk to me, because you know your actors are going to keep fit. Nothing too fancy ... you know? Just a little something to help out the show's Sex Appeal.

They tend to cuddle the stars of the show and that means not forcing them to workout if they don't want to.

How do you know they weren't provided a gym? Also they worked 18 hour days, when were they to go to the gym?

Also from conventions and behind the scenes videos...most people wore a corset like device under their uniforms. It was not necessarily to hold in a stomach but more to provide smooth lines in the uniform. They are very anti wrinkle and crease. For that reason the pants also had straps that went under their boots to keep the lines smooth and straight
