STC Ep. 7: "Embrace The Winds" speculation and discussion....

Agreed, although I feel the fit should have been a little better.

I agree, I felt both of Gray's uniforms seemed a little ill-fitting. I realize that she's probably not as slim as she once was (though she's certainly still a very gorgeous woman), but a better job of tailoring would have been more flattering. Or maybe they just didn't film well. I've definitely seen costumes that looked fantastic in person, yet seemed a bit awkward when filmed.

I assume it's the same material as what Kirk is wearing for his dress uniform? If so, it must just be the way it's cut. I thought her non dress uniform looked good. She looks great for 66!

As best I recall, her dress uniform was only seen when she was on the bench, so the fit of the lower part isn't that critical.

TOS had a misogynist and sexist bent against women.

  • ..and The Next Generation--praised (more than it deserved) for being "progressive" started with Marina Sirtis' Troi wearing outfits designed to accentuate her body. Not a one-shot guest star, but one of the leads audiences would see every week.
  • Voyager's Jeri Ryan. 'nuff said. Maxim in Space.
  • Enterprise's Jolene Blalock - FHM Among the Stars.
..and there's much more to be found in those series. Image is what stays with audiences--forms lasting impressions. So, you can claim TOS had a "sexist bent against women," but under the "progressive" Rick Berman period of series, ST was aggressively, unabashedly selling female flesh for sexual excitement just as much as TNG's contemporary Baywatch. TOS was nowhere near that kind of treatment of women, and again, more than any other legacy from a series, the visual--the image says much about the beliefs of the producers and how they treat subjects and/or characters.

I never said TOS was the only offender. TNG did it, DS9 did it, VOY did it, ENT did it. I'm hoping Discovery decides to be the non-misogynist adult in the room.

Of course, Persis walking around in a nightie was the exception to those boring uni-sex uniforms.

Yeah nobody is going to go for a bald woman unless we make her half naked says the producer.

On a side note anyone heard a formal or informal release date for EP8? (Come on Vic we mere mortals have to make plans)

Times being what they are, I wouldn't be surprised to see announcements being fewer and later than they used to be.

I think that nightie was supposed to be a "leisure robe." That term is surfacing from some murky depths in my memory.

I think the TMP uniforms would look okay if the used TOS colour scheme. Black trousers with green/gold, blue, and red tunics. I suppose that bio-buckle is stupid no matter what.

One of the first times I ever found or lurked on this board, it was in a thread with photoshopped movie era pics with the colors altered like that. It was pretty awesome stuff IMO.

I've always wondered why they went with a bio-buckle instead of having the bio-monitor part of the wrist communicator.

And ditch all the onesies.

The onesies weren't bad in concept, just a bit too tight ("Decker unit"). As a utility uniform, they make sense. After all, onesies have been around since TOS.

Kirk's shortsleeve number looked pretty good.

My favorite of the TMP uniforms.

I don't mind coveralls, but I draw the line at unitards.
