Let's get back to the thread before the... er, kerfluffle above. So if Starfleet has 12 capitol (or capital, not sure of that spelling) ships, what must the rest of Starfleet look like during the TOS era?

Capital.

IMO, Franz Joseph had the right idea generally when it comes to the "rest of the Fleet":

Explorer/Starship/"Heavy Cruiser"-type: Constitution or Starship-class during most of the mid-to-late 2200s
Destroyer/Scout-type: Speculatively designated as Saladin and Hermes-class for the mid-to-late 2200s. Canonically the Oberth-class would seem to slot in at this level, the Kelvin-type may have been inspired by the Saladin/Hermes and may have served in the Destroyer role.
Transport/Tug: Speculatively designated as Ptolemy-class for the mid-to-late 2200s. Canonically the Miranda-class has mostly ended up in this category by the mid-2300s.

An earlier version of the Miranda-class is often speculated to also exist in this period, slotting between the first two categories. Although no canon specifically exists for this, a number of fan designations exist for it, and the Kelvin Timeline Armstrong and Mayflower-types could both serve in this capacity.

Technically FJ's works are not canon either although he had some interesting ideas.

Meh.

Getting too hung up on canon is stifling and un-fun. Besides, elements of FJ's work in fact are canon, given that, at least, the Scout/Destroyer type was seen on screen in the bridge monitors of the TMP ship as well as verbal references to the Scouts Columbia and Revere which (name and registry inclusive) are both drawn from the FJTM.

Sure, it diverges from the on-screen TOS material, but enough of it got worked in that it's fair to include it for this sort of discussion. IMHO.

I can easily see a Reliant style variant during TOS. Over the years I've seen a number of fan designs that would look right at home in the TOS universe. I've done it myself.

Ditto with hardware. I've seen conjectural fan designs for a TOS era phaser rifle that looks more convincing than the one seen in WNMHGB which looks like it belongs to "The Cage" era.

On screen! ON SCREEN! :D

I have developed over the years a weird idea that the only TOS era ship with a saucer was the Starship. Of course both FJ AND Enterprise blow this out of the water. (And I suppose the TAS Bonaventure.) But my own little world is a nice place.

It depends on whether you mean "including this thread" or not. :p
