WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

In the article I linked to before, Brian Cronin says the following:

In other words, it doesn't make sense to deny you were copying one thing by claiming you were copying several other things.

And I can totally believe that someone as unoriginal as Liefeld, in the course of basing a character on several conscious influences, might also be unconsciously influenced by something else along the way. Maybe there were just so many different influences that he overlooked one in the clutter.

How popular was Deathstroke when Deadpool was created. Outside of the Titans he wasn't a big player for many years in the DCU.

No, in the passage you quoted, I was referring to Black Mask.
Ah, I understand. Black Mask I became familiar with reading Batman around the Infinite Crisis period. K5s will disagree perhaps, but IMO he's basically a Kingpin style character manipulating a lot of things behind the scenes which is why I think he could work well with Deathstroke being the muscle.

^That could be really cool.
To go back to the cross-pollination idea didn't Jack Kirby specifically create a group for one company that was almost identical to one he created for the other, so he could continue the using the ideas he had for the first one? I think it was the DC group was the New Gods, but I can't remember which the Marvel one was.

The Eternals.

Deathstroke had his Titans appearances, but later got a solo series in 1991. By then in the "age of the anti-hero" (the 90s) Deathstroke had shifted from villain to not-so-baddie. He even coordinated with Batman, Superman and the Justice League to fight for the planet.

I wouldn't really compare Black Mask to Kingpin, but there have been several Black Masks just in the comics, so maybe one of them was more like Kingpin instead of just kind of generically gangster (or outright psychotic, like at least one Black Mask was). I don't really consider Deathstroke as "muscle", or at least not just muscle. He's a very intelligent mercenary (pre-New 52), at least when it comes to things like combat and strategy. He'd get hired by armies and evil organizations, or for really special single jobs (like someone putting a hit out on a superhero, for instance). As opposed to Deadshot, who would probably take jobs from any mobster rich enough to afford his rates. Basically, I'd say Deadshot is more like Bullseye, and Deathstroke is a bit higher up on the food chain when it comes to the types of jobs he takes.

I think the New Gods were originally intended to be for Marvel and was supposed to be tied to Asgard. I think you can even see a Thor cameo of sorts (he's dead) in an early issue.

I have the Teen Titans issue in which he first appeared, as The Terminator. DC stopped using that moniker for obvious reasons shortly thereafter. Even in the early days of the new fifty-two he was basically an amped up version of Deadshot. Like Harley, he's evolved into more of an anti-hero. The character can be fascinating when written well, but I've never been interested in him as a lead character.
I have some issues of Deathstroke the Terminator from 1991-1993. He does a lot of mercenary work & has a pretty mess up family life - his wife wants to kill him on sight & even pulls a gun on him when he visits her in the hospital . She's the reason he has only one eye. Not that he doesn't deserve it, they are a family of killers.

I also have an issue of a Deadshot miniseries. Deadshot is a nihilist who hates himself and is essentially 'running out the clock' waiting for death. He killed his brother as a kid, his brother shot & crippled his father after being manipulated by their mother, His mother had his son killed as part of a suicide plan to make him mad enough to kill her, Deadshot shot & crippled his mother in revenge. Nice people!

The New Gods start after the death of the old Gods in Ragnarok. Hence New Gods. But Kirby always intended them for DC, never for Marvel.

Teen Titans were a pretty big thing themselves in the '80s, he was certainly well known.

Deathstroke received his first solo series the same year Deadpool first appeared. So he was a pretty big deal when Deadpool showed up.

Collider did a panel show (link) that included the question "Will Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince have a romance in 'Justice League?'"

They do look a bit lovey dovey, but I can't imagine it being an actual romance. I think it would be more of a "we can never be together" thing.
I've been thinking a bit more about this. I think TPTB would probably avoid an actual relationship, for a couple of reasons. First, it would highlight something that you generally try to hide in JL stories, which is the absurd difference in powers between the different members. Second, Batman is fundamentally a loner (the mission comes first), and, as a function of his character, any attempt at romance is doomed.

Arguments why they might do it? Well, it would be something else that the Marvel movies haven't yet done with their major characters. And it could add a humanising element to the JL story. (OTOH, it would also be yet another plot point to service in a story which will already be pretty well full to bursting point.)

Batman's tactical suit or should I say Tact-owl?

Goodnight everyone!

Did you brighten that up? The version I saw on IGN was really dark.
I like it, it looks like a mashup of the Arkhamverse and Nolan suits.
